What is Tanwin?

Tanwin means “adding an ‘n’ sound” at the end of words.

Simple Explanation:

• Instead of saying “ba” we say “ban”
• Instead of saying “bi” we say “bin”
• Instead of saying “bu” we say “bun”

Why is it called Tanwin?

• “Tanwin” comes from the word “nun” (ن)
• We add the sound of “n” to vowels
• It makes words sound complete

The Three Types of Tanwin

1. Tanwin Fath (ً)

• Looks like: Two small lines above the letter
• Sounds like: “an” (like “ban”)
• Example: كِتَابًا (kitāban) = a book

2. Tanwin Kasr (ٍ)

• Looks like: Two small lines below the letter
• Sounds like: “in” (like “bin”)
• Example: وَلَدٍ (waladin) = of a boy

3. Tanwin Dhamm (ٌ)

• Looks like: Two small circles above the letter
• Sounds like: “un” (like “bun”)
• Example: بَيْتٌ (baytun) = a house

How to Recognize Tanwin

Easy Way to Remember:

• Single marks = regular vowels (a, i, u)
• Double marks = Tanwin (an, in, un)

Visual Guide:

• ً = Double Fathah = “an”
• ٍ = Double Kasrah = “in”
• ٌ = Double Dhammah = “un”

Where We See Tanwin:

• Usually at the end of words
• On the last letter of many nouns
• In Qur’ānic reading
• In Arabic books

• بً = “ban”
• تً = “tan”
• سً = “san”

With Tanwin Kasr (ٍ):

• بٍ = “bin”
• تٍ = “tin”

With Tanwin Dhamm (ٌ):

• بٌ = “bun”
• تٌ = “tun”
• سٌ = “sun”

Simple Rules

When to Use Tanwin:

• When the word is indefinite (not specific)
• Like saying “a book” instead of “the book”
• At the end of many Arabic nouns

Important Note:

• Tanwin letters have no extra harakat
• The Tanwin mark IS the vowel
• Always pronounce the “n” sound clearly
