Verses 4-6 in Arabic
Verse 4: وَلَا أَنَا عَابِدٌ مَّا عَبَدتُّمْ “Wa laa ana ‘aabidum maa ‘abadtum”
Verse 5: وَلَا أَنتُمْ عَابِدُونَ مَا أَعْبُدُ “Wa laa antum ‘aabiduuna maa a’bud”
Verse 6: لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ “Lakum diinukum wa liya diin”
English Translation
Verse 4: “And I will not worship what you have worshipped”
- The Prophet (ﷺ) will never change his beliefs
- He won’t worship idols or false gods
- His faith in Allah is permanent
Verse 5: “And you will not worship what I worship”
- This repeats verse 3 for emphasis
- Shows the difference is permanent
- Both sides are clear about their positions
Verse 6: “To you your religion, and to me my religion”
- Everyone follows their own path
- We respect each other’s choice
- This is the famous verse about religious tolerance
