What is Shaddah?
The Symbol: ( ّ )
- Shaddah looks like a small “w” above a letter
- It means we say the letter twice (double it)
- Makes the sound stronger and longer
- Very important for correct pronunciation
Examples of Shaddah:
- رَبّ (rabb) – Lord
- حَجّ (hajj) – pilgrimage
- صَلّى (salla) – he prayed
- كَبَّرَ (kabbara) – he said “Allahu Akbar”
Why Do We Use Shaddah?
Reasons for Shaddah:
- To show double letters: When two same letters come together
- To change meaning: Different meanings with or without Shaddah
- For correct pronunciation: Helps us say words properly
- In Qur’an reading: Essential for proper recitation

- مَدَ (madda) – he extended

What is Alif-Maddah?

- Alif-Maddah looks like Alif with a wavy line on top
- It makes a long “aa” sound

Maddah Pronunciation:
