What is Shaddah?

The Symbol: ( ّ )

  • Shaddah looks like a small “w” above a letter
  • It means we say the letter twice (double it)
  • Makes the sound stronger and longer
  • Very important for correct pronunciation

Examples of Shaddah:

  • رَبّ (rabb) – Lord
  • حَجّ (hajj) – pilgrimage
  • صَلّى (salla) – he prayed
  • كَبَّرَ (kabbara) – he said “Allahu Akbar”

Why Do We Use Shaddah?

Reasons for Shaddah:

  1. To show double letters: When two same letters come together
  2. To change meaning: Different meanings with or without Shaddah
  3. For correct pronunciation: Helps us say words properly
  4. In Qur’an reading: Essential for proper recitation

  • مَدَ (madda) – he extended

What is Alif-Maddah?

The Symbol: ( آ )

  • Alif-Maddah looks like Alif with a wavy line on top
  • It makes a long “aa” sound
  • Longer than regular Alif
  • Found in many important Islamic words

Examples of Alif-Maddah:

  • آمَنَ (aamana) – he believed
  • قُرْآن (Qur’aan) – Qur’an
  • آيَة (aayah) – verse
  • إِيمَان (iimaan) – faith

How to Pronounce

Shaddah Pronunciation:

  • Hold the letter sound longer
  • Make it stronger
  • Like saying the letter twice
  • Practice: ب + ب = بّ

Maddah Pronunciation:

  • Stretch the “aa” sound
  • Hold it for 2-3 counts
  • Longer than regular Alif
  • Practice: آ = “aaaa”
