What are Other Symbols?

Other symbols are signs and objects that represent different groups, leaders, and organizations in our community. We should respect them just like we respect national symbols.

Types of Other Symbols and How to Respect Them

Traditional Leaders and Their Symbols

Traditional Leaders:

  • Oba, Emir, Obi, Tor (kings and chiefs)
  • They rule local communities
  • They keep customs and traditions alive

Their Symbols:

  • Royal crowns and caps
  • Traditional clothes and robes
  • Palace buildings
  • Royal staff or scepter

How to Respect Traditional Leaders:

  • Greet them properly with traditional greetings
  • Don’t sit when they are standing
  • Listen when they speak
  • Bow or prostrate as your culture requires
  • Address them with their proper titles

Staff of Office

What is Staff of Office?

  • Special stick or rod given to leaders
  • Shows they have authority to lead
  • Symbol of power and responsibility

Examples of Staff of Office:

  • Traditional rulers’ royal staff
  • Government officials’ ceremonial staff
  • Religious leaders’ pastoral staff

How to Respect Staff of Office:

  • Don’t touch it without permission
  • Stand when it is being carried in ceremony
  • Show respect when leaders hold it
  • Don’t play with or joke about it

Religious Leaders and Their Symbols

Religious Leaders:

  • Pastors, Priests, Imams, Reverends
  • They lead people in worship
  • They teach about God and faith

Religious Symbols:

  • Cross (Christianity)
  • Crescent and star (Islam)
  • Church buildings
  • Mosque with minaret
  • Holy books (Bible, Quran)

How to Respect Religious Leaders and Symbols:

  • Listen quietly during religious services
  • Handle holy books carefully
  • Dress properly when visiting places of worship
  • Don’t make noise in churches or mosques
  • Greet religious leaders respectfully

Highway Codes (Road Signs)

Highway Code Symbols:

  • Traffic lights
  • Road signs
  • Zebra crossings
  • Speed limit signs

How to Respect Highway Codes:

  • Obey all traffic rules
  • Follow road signs
  • Cross roads at proper places
  • Wait for traffic lights
  • Don’t damage road signs

Why We Should Respect Other Symbols

  • Shows good upbringing and manners
  • Maintains peace in the community
  • Preserves our culture and traditions
  • Shows respect for authority
  • Makes us responsible citizens
