Factors that Hinder National Unity:
- TRIBALISM AND ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION Meaning: Showing excessive loyalty to one’s own ethnic group while discriminating against others.
How it Hinders Unity:
- Creates divisions between ethnic groups
- Promotes “us versus them” mentality
- Leads to unfair treatment of other groups
- Prevents national integration
- Causes conflicts and tensions
Examples:
- Refusing to employ qualified people because of their tribe
- Only voting for candidates from your ethnic group
- Speaking negatively about other ethnic groups
- Avoiding friendships with people from other tribes
- Showing preference to your ethnic group in business dealings
Effects on Nigeria:
- Slows down national development
- Creates political instability
- Reduces trust between communities
- Causes brain drain as people migrate
- Weakens national institutions
Warning Signs:
- Using derogatory names for other ethnic groups
- Making generalizations about entire ethnic groups
- Believing your tribe is superior to others

- RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE Meaning: Refusing to accept or respect different religious beliefs and practices, often leading to conflicts.

- CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM Meaning: Dishonest practices and favoritism based on family, ethnic, or personal relationships rather than merit.
How it Hinders Unity:
- Creates unfair advantages for some groups
- Leads to poor governance and development
- Breeds resentment and anger among citizens
- Destroys trust in government institutions
- Prevents qualified people from contributing to national development
Examples:
- Government officials giving jobs to only their relatives
- Awarding contracts to friends instead of qualified companies
- Stealing public money meant for development projects
- Admitting unqualified students to schools because of connections
