What are Highway Codes?

Highway codes are rules and signs that tell people how to behave safely on roads. They help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe while traveling.

Important Highway Codes for Children

Traffic Light Colors

RED LIGHT:

  • Meaning: STOP
  • All vehicles must stop completely
  • Pedestrians should not cross the road

YELLOW/AMBER LIGHT:

  • Meaning: GET READY
  • Vehicles should prepare to stop
  • Do not start crossing

GREEN LIGHT:

  • Meaning: GO
  • Vehicles can move forward
  • Pedestrians can cross carefully

Road Signs for Pedestrians

STOP Sign:

  • Red octagon shape with “STOP” written
  • Everyone must stop completely
  • Look left and right before moving

Zebra Crossing:

 

  • Black and white stripes on the road
  • Safe place for people to cross
  • Vehicles must stop for pedestrians

Pedestrian Crossing Sign:

  • Shows a person walking
  • Warns drivers that people cross here
  • Children should use these crossings

Safety Rules for Children

When Walking:

  • Always walk on the sidewalk
  • If no sidewalk, walk facing traffic
  • Hold an adult’s hand when crossing
  • Never run into the road suddenly

When Crossing Roads:

  • Look LEFT, then RIGHT, then LEFT again
  • Use zebra crossings or pedestrian bridges
  • Wait for all vehicles to stop
  • Cross quickly but don’t run

In Vehicles:

  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Sit properly in your seat
  • Don’t stick hands or head out of windows
  • Don’t distract the driver

On School Buses:

  • Wait for the bus to stop completely
  • Get on and off carefully
  • Stay seated while the bus is moving
  • Listen to the bus driver

Basic Road Signs Children Should Know

  • School Zone Sign: Yellow sign showing children
  • No Entry Sign: Red circle with white bar
  • Speed Limit Signs: Numbers in circles
  • Hospital Sign: Red cross symbol
  • Fuel Station Sign: Picture of fuel pump
