Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Explain reasons why we work
  • Identify at least six types of work in the local community
  • Describe the tools used for work done in the community

Lesson Content:

Why Do We Work?

Work is any activity that people do to earn money, help others, or make life better. Everyone needs to work to survive and contribute to society.

Reasons for Working:

  1. To Earn Money:
    1. We need money to buy food, clothes, and other necessities
    2. Money helps us pay for housing, education, and healthcare
    3. We can save money for future needs
  2. To Help Our Family:
    1. Parents work to provide for their children
    2. We help with house chores to support our family
    3. Working together makes family life easier
  3. To Help Our Community:
    1. Our work benefits other people in the community
    2. We contribute to making our society better
    3. Community development depends on everyone’s work
  4. To Feel Useful and Happy:
    1. Work gives us a sense of purpose
    2. We feel proud when we accomplish something
    3. Helps us develop our skills and abilities
  5. To Serve God:
    1. Using our talents to help others pleases God
    2. Honest work is a form of worship
    3. We are blessed when we work diligently

KINDS OF WORK IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY:

  1. FARMING: What they do: Grow crops like yam, cassava, maize, rice, and vegetables for food.

Tools they use:

  • Hoe for digging and weeding
  • Cutlass for cutting grass and harvesting
  • Rake for gathering leaves
  • Watering can for watering plants
  • Basket for carrying farm produce

How they help the community:

  • Provide food for everyone
  • Supply raw materials for other businesses
  • Create employment for others
  1. WEAVING: What they do: Make beautiful clothes, mats, and baskets from cotton, silk, or other materials.

Tools they use:

  • Loom for weaving cloth
  • Needle and thread for sewing
  • Scissors for cutting materials
  • Measuring tape for correct sizes
  • Different colored threads

How they help the community:

  • Provide beautiful traditional clothes

KINDS OF WORK IN OUR MODERN COMMUNITY:

  1. DOCTOR: What they do: Treat sick people and help them get better.

Tools they use:

  • Stethoscope for listening to heartbeat
  • Thermometer for checking temperature
  • Syringe for giving injections
  • Medicine for treating diseases
  • X-ray machine for seeing inside the body

How they help:

  • Keep people healthy and strong
  • Save lives during emergencies
  • Prevent diseases from spreading

  • Drawing instruments for making plans
  • Calculator for mathematical calculations

Let pupils mime different types of work while others guess what job is being performed. Discuss the tools each worker uses and how they help the community.
