Lesson Content:
Who is a Leader? A leader is someone who guides, directs, and makes decisions for a group of people. Leaders help solve problems and show others the right way to do things.
Qualities of a Leader:
- Makes good decisions
- Helps people solve problems
- Cares about others
- Shows good example
- Listens to people’s concerns
Ethnic Groups in Nigeria and Their Leaders:
Nigeria has many ethnic groups, and each group has traditional leaders with special titles.
- YORUBA PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: OBA
About Yoruba People:
- Mostly found in: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti states
- Language: Yoruba
- Famous cities: Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta
About the Oba:
- The traditional king of Yoruba communities
- Lives in a palace
- Wears beautiful traditional clothes and crown
- Makes important decisions for the community
- Examples: Oba of Lagos, Alaafin of Oyo, Ooni of Ife
- IGBO PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: EZE
About Igbo People:
- Mostly found in: Anambra, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi states
- Language: Igbo
- Famous cities: Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba
About the Eze:
- The traditional king of Igbo communities
- Respected elder and wise man
- Settles disputes and maintains peace
- Preserves Igbo culture and traditions
- Examples: Eze Ndigbo, Obi of Onitsha
- BENIN PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: ENUGO/OBA
About Benin People:
- Mostly found in: Edo State
- Language: Edo/Benin
- Famous city: Benin City
About the Enugo/Oba:
- Ancient traditional ruler
- Has a very long history
- Lives in a beautiful palace
- Known for bronze and ivory artworks
- Example: Oba of Benin
- NUPE PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: ETSU
About Nupe People:
- Mostly found in: Niger, Kwara, Kogi states
- Language: Nupe
- Famous towns: Bida, Mokwa
About the Etsu:
- Traditional ruler of Nupe people
- Leads in both traditional and religious matters
- Makes decisions for the community
- Example: Etsu Nupe
- EBIRA PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: OHINOYI
About Ebira People:
- Mostly found in: Kogi State
- Language: Ebira
- Famous town: Okene
About the Ohinoyi:
- Traditional king of Ebira people
- Spiritual and political leader
- Preserves Ebira customs and traditions
- Example: Ohinoyi of Ebiraland
Other Traditional Title Holders:
HAUSA-FULANI PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: EMIR/SARKI
- Found in Northern Nigeria
- Examples: Emir of Kano, Emir of Sokoto
TIVI PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: TOR
- Found in Benue State
- Example: Tor Tiv
IJAW PEOPLE: Traditional Leader: AMANYANABO
- Found in Rivers and Bayelsa States
- Example: Amanyanabo of different kingdoms
How These Leaders Help Their Communities:

- Organize festivals and celebrations

Class Activity:
Show pictures of different traditional rulers in their traditional attires. Let pupils identify which ethnic group each leader belongs to.
