Topic: Writing: Argumentative Essay

What is an Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay presents reasons for and against a particular topic, then gives the writer’s opinion based on evidence.

Structure of Argumentative Essay:

  1. Introduction – Present the topic and state your position
  2. Arguments For – Give reasons supporting one side
  3. Arguments Against – Give reasons supporting the other side
  4. Conclusion – State your final opinion with reasons

Sample Topic: “Science Does More Harm Than Good to Humanity”

Arguments FOR (Science causes harm):

  • Nuclear weapons can destroy the world
  • Environmental pollution from factories
  • People becoming too dependent on technology
  • Loss of traditional skills and knowledge

Arguments AGAINST (Science helps humanity):

  • Medical advances save millions of lives
  • Technology improves communication and transportation
  • Scientific research solves food and water problems
  • Education and knowledge reduce ignorance

Exercise J – Essay Planning

Choose one topic and plan your argumentative essay:

Topics:

  1. “Students should wear school uniforms”
  2. “Television does more harm than good to children”
  3. “Village life is better than city life”

Exercise K – Writing Practice

Write the introduction paragraph for your chosen topic.

Good introduction should:

  • State the topic clearly
  • Mention that there are different opinions
  • Give your position briefly
  • Make the reader want to continue

Sample Introduction: “The question of whether students should wear school uniforms has been debated for many years. While some people believe uniforms are necessary for discipline and equality, others argue that they limit students’ freedom of expression. After considering both sides carefully, I believe that school uniforms are beneficial for students and schools.”
