What is Command Intonation?

Commands have a falling intonation ↘. Your voice goes down at the end to show authority and firmness.

Examples of Commands:

• Close the door. ↘
• Open your books. ↘
• Stand up straight. ↘
• Stop talking now. ↘
• Wash your hands. ↘

Polite Commands (Requests):

• Please sit down. ↘
• Kindly help me. ↘
• Could you listen carefully. ↘

Exercise A – Command Practice

Read these commands with falling intonation:

1. Clean the blackboard.
2. Submit your homework.
3. Please keep quiet.
4. Turn to page twenty.
5. Pack your bags carefully.
6. Don’t run in the corridor.

Practice Activity: Work with a partner. Take turns giving and following these commands:

• Touch your nose
• Clap your hands twice
• Point to the ceiling
• Close your eyes
