Getting Around Our World

Transportation helps people and goods move from one place to another. There are three main types of transportation: land, water, and air transport.

Land Transportation includes vehicles that travel on roads and railways. Cars, buses, motorcycles, and bicycles use roads to carry passengers. Trains move on railway tracks and can transport many people quickly over long distances. In Nigeria, popular forms of land transport include danfo buses, okada motorcycles, and the Lagos BRT system.

Water Transportation uses rivers, lakes, and oceans. Ships and boats carry both people and cargo across water bodies. In coastal areas like Lagos, ferries help people cross lagoons. Large cargo ships transport goods between countries, while fishing boats bring fresh fish to our markets.

Air Transportation is the fastest way to travel long distances. Airplanes can cross continents in hours. Helicopters can land in small spaces and are useful for emergencies. Nigeria’s major airports in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt connect us to the world.

Each type of transportation has advantages and disadvantages. The choice depends on distance, cost, speed, and the type of cargo being moved.
