Topic: Materials used for Packaging; Nylon, Carton, Paper, Sack, Boxes etc
Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify different types of packaging
- Give examples of each type of packaging
- Produce their own packaged product
Lesson Content:
Types of Packaging:
- Primary Packaging This is the first layer that touches the food directly.
Examples:
- Plastic wrapper around biscuits
- Bottle containing palm oil
- Nylon bag around bread
- Can containing milk
- Plastic bag around garri
- Secondary Packaging This holds several primary packages together.
Examples:
- Carton box containing many packets of biscuits
- Bag containing many sachets of water
- Basket holding many bottles of palm oil
- Crate containing many bottles of soft drinks
- Tertiary Packaging This is used for transportation and storage of many secondary packages.
Examples:
- Large truck carrying many cartons
- Container holding many bags of rice
- Warehouse storing many crates
- Ship carrying many containers
Simple Examples Students Can Understand:
- Primary: One sweet in its wrapper
- Secondary: Many sweets in a small box
- Tertiary: Many boxes in a big truck
Practical Activity: Students will create their own simple packaged product using:
- Primary: Put groundnuts in a small plastic bag
- Secondary: Put several small bags in a bigger box
- Tertiary: Put many boxes in a basket for transport
HOMEWORK:
- Define primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
- Give 2 examples of each type of packaging
- Draw a simple diagram showing all three types of packaging for one product
