Content
What is Basketball? Basketball is a team sport where two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through the opponent’s basket (hoop).
Facilities in Basketball (Fixed structures)
- Basketball Court
- Rectangular playing area
- Size: 28m × 15m (standard)
- Made of wood (indoor) or concrete (outdoor)
- Baskets/Hoops
- Two hoops, one at each end
- Height: 3.05 meters (10 feet)
- Net attached to rim
- Backboard
- Board behind the basket
- Usually rectangular
- Helps ball go into basket
- Free Throw Line
- Line 4.57 meters from backboard
- Where free throws are taken
- Three-Point Line
- Arc around basket

Basic Rules
- 5 players per team on court
- Score by putting ball through hoop
- 2 points for normal shot, 3 for long shot, 1 for free throw
- Cannot run with ball without dribbling (traveling)
- Cannot hold ball more than 5 seconds when closely guarded
- Game divided into quarters

Safety Measures in Basketball
Before Playing:
- Warm up and stretch properly
- Wear appropriate basketball shoes
- Remove jewelry and watches
- Check court for hazards (wet spots, debris)
- Inspect ball for proper inflation
- Wear protective gear if needed (knee pads, mouthguard)
During Play:
- Stay hydrated – drink water regularly
- Follow rules and referee decisions
- Communicate with teammates
- Avoid aggressive play and fouling
- Be aware of surroundings
- Control your movements
- Don’t push or shove opponents
After Playing:
- Cool down with light exercises
- Stretch to prevent muscle soreness
- Report any injuries immediately
- Treat minor injuries (ice, rest)
General Safety:
- Have first aid kit available
- Play on safe, clean courts
- Respect other players
- Don’t play when injured
- Get proper coaching and training
