What are Poems and Rhymes?

Poems are special kinds of writing that:

• Use beautiful words to paint pictures in our minds
• Often have rhythm (like music)
• May tell stories or express feelings
• Can be short or long
• Make language sound beautiful

Rhymes are words that sound the same at the end:

• cat / hat / rat / bat
• play / day / way / say
• night / light / bright / sight

What Makes Words Rhyme?

Words rhyme when they have the same ending sound:

Perfect Rhymes:

• -at family: cat, bat, hat, rat, mat, fat, sat
• -ay family: play, day, way, say, bay, hay, may
• -ight family: night, light, bright, sight, fight, right
• -ock family: rock, clock, sock, block, lock, dock
• -all family: ball, call, fall, hall, mall, tall, wall

Examples of Rhyming:

• “The cat sat on the mat” (cat/sat/mat rhyme)
• “I like to play every day” (play/day rhyme)
• “The bright light shines at night” (bright/light/night rhyme)

How to Recognize Rhyming Words

Listen for the Sound: Say the words out loud and listen to the ending sounds:

• tree and bee → both end with “ee” sound ✓
• dog and log → both end with “og” sound ✓
• sun and moon → different ending sounds ✗

Look for Spelling Patterns: Words that rhyme often have similar letter patterns:

• rain, pain, main → all end with “-ain”
• boat, coat, goat → all end with “-oat”
• king, ring, sing → all end with “-ing”

Types of Rhyming Poems

1. SIMPLE RHYMING POEMS (AABB Pattern)

Lines 1 and 2 rhyme, lines 3 and 4 rhyme:

“My Little Cat”

My little cat is soft and white, (A)

She sleeps with me throughout the night. (A)

She likes to play with balls of yarn, (B)

And hides beneath the big red barn. (B)

“The Happy Sun”

The sun comes up to start the day, (A)

It chases all the clouds away. (A)

It makes the flowers grow so tall, (B)

And warms us up throughout the fall. (B)

2. ALTERNATING RHYME POEMS (ABAB Pattern)

Lines 1 and 3 rhyme, lines 2 and 4 rhyme:

“The Garden”

In my garden flowers grow, (A)

Red and yellow, pink and white, (B)

Butterflies dance to and fro, (A)

What a beautiful, lovely sight! (B)

“My Best Friend”

My friend and I like to play, (A)

We run around the yard so free, (B)

We have such fun throughout the day, (A)

As happy as two kids can be. (B)

Examples of Rhyming Poems

Poem 1: “The Little Bird”

A little bird sits in a tree, (A)

As happy as happy can be. (A)

It sings a song both loud and clear, (B)

For everyone around to hear. (B)

The bird flies high up in the air, (C)

Without a worry or a care. (C)

It builds its nest with twigs so small, (D)

Before the leaves begin to fall. (D)

Poem 2: “Rainy Day Fun”

When raindrops fall upon the ground, (A)

They make a soft and gentle sound. (A)

I like to watch them on the glass, (B)

And see the people hurry past. (B)

Inside my house I’m warm and dry, (C)

I watch the clouds go floating by. (C)

With books to read and games to play, (D)

I love a cozy, rainy day. (D)

Poem 3: “My Family”

My mother cooks the best food ever, (A)

My father tells jokes that are clever. (A)

My sister likes to dance and sing, (B)

My brother plays with everything. (B)

We laugh and talk when we’re together, (C)

Through sunny days and stormy weather. (C)

My family is the best for me, (D)

As loving as a family can be. (D)

Rhyming Word Families

-ing Family: sing, ring, king, wing, bring, string, spring, thing

Sample Poem with -ing words:

The king began to sing, (sing)

While wearing his golden ring. (ring)

A bird flew by on its wing, (wing)

Oh, what a wonderful thing! (thing)

-ake Family: make, take, cake, lake, wake, snake, brake, shake

Sample Poem with -ake words:

I like to make a chocolate cake, (make/cake)

To share beside the pretty lake. (lake)

I wake up early just to bake, (wake/bake)

And watch the gentle waters shake. (shake)

-eet Family: meet, feet, sweet, street, neat, beat, seat, heat

Sample Poem with -eet words:

I walk down the busy street, (street)

With my two dancing feet. (feet)

The candy tastes so very sweet, (sweet)

Making my day feel complete. (meet – sounds like complete)

Recognition Activities

Activity 1: Rhyme or No Rhyme? Listen to these word pairs and decide if they rhyme:

1. cat / hat → YES (both end with -at)
2. dog / tree → NO (different endings)
3. sun / fun → YES (both end with -un)
4. book / look → YES (both end with -ook)
5. car / bird → NO (different endings)

Activity 2: Find the Rhyming Word Complete these poems by choosing the word that rhymes:

The little mouse ran up the stairs,

And hid beneath the wooden _______. (chairs/tables/boxes)

Answer: chairs (rhymes with stairs)

I have a dog who likes to play,

He runs around outside all _______. (night/day/time)

Answer: day (rhymes with play)

Activity 3: Rhyming Word Hunt Find words that rhyme with:

• cat: hat, bat, rat, mat, sat, fat
• blue: true, new, grew, flew, drew, knew
• bell: tell, sell, well, spell, fell, yell

Creating Your Own Rhyming Poems

Step 1: Choose a Topic

• My pet
• My family
• My school
• The weather
• My favorite food

Step 2: Think of Rhyming Words If your topic is “My Pet Dog”:

• dog/log, play/day, run/fun, tail/pail

Step 3: Write Simple Lines

My dog likes to run and play,

He brings me joy throughout the day.

His tail wags when he sees me come,

Playing with him is so much fun!

Step 4: Check Your Rhymes

• play/day ✓
• come/fun ✓ (approximately rhymes)

Non-Rhyming Words (Do NOT Rhyme)

It’s important to know when words do NOT rhyme:

• elephant / tiny → different ending sounds
• happy / sad → different ending sounds
• red / green → different ending sounds
• big / small → different ending sounds

Practice: Which words do NOT rhyme?

1. cake / make / book → book doesn’t rhyme
2. tree / see / car → car doesn’t rhyme
3. night / light / day → day doesn’t rhyme
