In our last lesson, we looked at the “invisible” network and the towers. Today, we are opening up the phone itself.
Even though there are thousands of different phone models (Infinix, Tecno, Samsung, iPhone), they all share the same “organs.” If you know these five parts, you can fix almost 80% of the phones that people will bring to you.
The Screen (The Face of the Phone)
The screen is the most fragile part of the phone and the most common thing you will be asked to fix. It is actually made of two or three layers stuck together.
- The Glass/Digitizer: This is the top layer. The “Digitizer” is the part that senses your touch. If the glass is cracked but the phone still shows pictures and responds to your finger, only this layer is broken.
- The LCD/OLED: This is the inner layer that actually creates the light and the colors. If you see black ink spots or vertical lines, the LCD is dead.
- The Backlight: This is what makes the screen bright.
Common Problem: Phone falls, glass shatters, or the “touch” stops working in certain corners.
The Battery (The Fuel Tank)
Almost all modern phones use Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries. They are great because they are light and hold a lot of power, but they are also sensitive.
- The Connector: This is the small “plug” that connects the battery to the motherboard.
- Life Cycles: Every battery has a lifespan. After about 2 years, it starts to get “tired” and dies faster.
- Safety Warning: If a battery is swollen (looking like a small pillow), it is dangerous. It can catch fire if you poke it. Always replace a swollen battery immediately.
Common Problem: Phone dies very fast, or the phone only works when it is plugged into the wall.
The Charging Port (The Mouth)
The charging port (usually a Micro-USB or Type-C) is one of the “hardest working” parts of a phone. It gets plugged and unplugged thousands of times.
- The Pins: Inside the port are tiny gold pins. If you “force” a charger in upside down, you bend these pins, and electricity can’t flow.
- Dust and Lint: Sometimes, a phone won’t charge simply because pocket lint (dirt from trousers) is stuffed inside the port.
- The Flex Cable: In many phones, the charging port is on a separate little board connected by a ribbon. This makes it easy to replace!
Common Problem: You have to “hold the charger at an angle” before the phone starts charging.
The SIM Slot and Memory Card Slot
These are the “gates” where information enters the phone.
- The SIM Slot: This has tiny spring-loaded pins that touch the gold part of your SIM card.
- The Tray: Many modern phones use a “tray” that you eject with a pin.
- The Danger: People often use the wrong size SIM or try to force a “cut” SIM card into the slot. This breaks the tiny gold pins inside. Once those pins are broken, the phone will say “No SIM Card Detected.”
Common Problem: The phone won’t show the network, or the SIM card gets stuck inside.
Keypads and Buttons (The Controls)
Even “touchscreen” phones have physical buttons for Power and Volume.
- The Switch: Underneath the plastic button you press is a tiny metal “dome switch.” When you click it, it completes a circuit.
- The Ribbon (Flex): These buttons are usually connected to the motherboard by a very thin, orange-colored ribbon. If this ribbon tears, the button stops working.
- Keypad Phones: For older phones (like the “Small Nokia”), the keypad is a large rubber sheet. If it gets oily or dirty, the buttons become “hard” to press.
Common Problem: The power button is “stuck,” or you have to press the volume button very hard to get a response.
Student Checklist: “The Quick Diagnosis”
When a customer brings a phone, check these in order:
- Physical Look: Is the screen cracked?
- Charging: Does it react when you plug it in?
- Power: Does it vibrate or make a sound when you hold the power button?
Internal Check: Look inside the charging port with a torch—is there dirt?
