The “Face” of the Phone

The display is how the phone “talks” to us. It is the most fragile part of any mobile device. When a customer brings a phone with a “broken screen,” they usually mean one of two things: either the outer glass is cracked, or the internal “picture maker” is dead.

In this lesson, we will look at the two main technologies used in screens today and the professional way to replace them.

 

LCD vs. OLED: What’s the Difference?

Not all screens are made the same way. If you try to put an LCD on a phone designed for OLED, it might not fit or look right.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

  • How it works: Think of a window with a big flashlight behind it. The LCD is the window, but it needs a “Backlight” to shine through it so you can see the colors.
  • The “Human” Side: Because it needs a big light behind it, LCDs are usually thicker. If the backlight dies, the screen goes dark even if the phone is on.
  • Pros: Cheaper to buy and replace.

OLED / AMOLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)

  • How it works: Each tiny pixel (dot) on the screen is its own little lightbulb. There is no big flashlight in the back.
  • The “Human” Side: When the screen wants to show “Black,” it just turns those pixels off completely. This is why OLEDs have “vibrant” colors and save battery life.
  • Pros: Thinner, brighter, and more beautiful.
  • Cons: Very expensive! A single OLED screen can cost half the price of the whole phone.

 

Identifying the “Screen Sandwich”

A modern display is actually a “sandwich” made of three layers:

  1. Top Glass: Just for protection. If this is cracked but the touch works, the phone is still usable.
  2. Digitizer (Touch): The invisible layer that feels your finger.
  3. Display Panel (LCD/OLED): The part that actually shows the pictures.

Note: In most modern smartphones (like iPhones or Samsung Galaxy), these three layers are glued together as one “Folder” or “Assembly.” You usually have to replace the whole thing.

 

Professional Screen Replacement Steps

Replacing a screen is like surgery. You must be gentle, or you will break the new screen before you even finish.

Step 1: The “Heat Treatment”

Most screens are held on by very strong glue. We use a Hot Air Gun or a Heat Plate to soften the glue.

  • Warning: If you make it too hot, you will melt the plastic parts inside!

Step 2: The “Prying”

Once the glue is soft, we use a thin plastic pick (like a guitar pick) to gently lift the screen. Never use a metal screwdriver to pry a screen—you will crack the glass instantly.

Step 3: The “Testing” (Crucial!)

Before you apply new glue, plug the new screen into the motherboard and turn the phone on.

  • Check the brightness.
  • Type every letter on the keyboard to make sure the touch works everywhere.
  • If you glue it before testing, you cannot return it to the supplier if it’s faulty!
  1. Common Display Faults
  • Lines on the Screen: Usually caused by a “drop.” The internal glass is cracked, or the “Flex Cable” is torn.
  • Ghost Touching: The phone starts opening apps by itself. This is a fault in the Digitizer.
  • Black Spots (Ink): This only happens to OLEDs. It means the internal pixels are “bleeding.” The spot will usually grow until the whole screen is black.

“When you are replacing a screen, keep the screws organized! Some screws are longer than others. If you put a ‘long’ screw into a ‘short’ hole, it can go right through the motherboard and kill the phone forever. This is called ‘Long Screw Damage’.”
