Consonants are speech sounds written with phonetic symbols. This note lists eleven consonant sounds: /ʃ/, /θ/, /s/, /z/, /ʒ/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /l/, /j/ and /w/. Each symbol is shown with example words, so students can see which sound a word contains, whatever its spelling.
Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- name the phonetic symbols for the consonant sounds /ʃ/, /θ/, /s/, /z/, /ʒ/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /l/, /j/ and /w/;
- give example words for each of these sounds;
- explain that a sound can be spelt in different ways, for example /n/ in “now” and “knock”.
What are the phonetic symbols of consonants?
- /ʃ/ as in ship, lashes, fish, etc.
- /θ/ as in bath, month, anthem, both, etc.
- /s/ as in snake, sip, seat, axe, etc.
- /z/ as in zip, zoom, exact, zebra, etc.

- /n/ as in now, knock, night, etc.
- /l/ as in low, lack, loom, etc.
