Importance of Agriculture – JSS1 Agricultural Science Lesson Note (First Term)

Agriculture is important because it provides food, clothing and shelter for people. It also benefits the nation by supplying raw materials to agro-allied industries, creating jobs, earning foreign exchange, giving people income, providing a market for industrial goods and bringing in revenue.

Behavioural objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. State the three major ways agriculture is important to man.
2. Explain how agriculture provides food and clothing.
3. List other ways agriculture is important to the nation.

What are the three major importances of agriculture to man?

• Food: this is the most important contribution of agriculture to man because food is required for survival. People need food to live. Farm animals also need food. The foods could be meat, eggs and milk from farm animals, and products from many different crops such as yam, rice, maize, etc.
• Clothing: agriculture provides cotton and other fibres from plants for textile production. It also provides silk, hides and skins, and wool from sheep, which are used for clothing, belts and bags. Agriculture supplies the materials for much of today’s fashion and clothing.
• Shelter: agriculture provides materials used to build houses.
