What is a Picture Story?

A picture story tells a complete story using a series of pictures or a single detailed picture. Good picture stories have clear beginning, middle, and end.

Key Points in Picture Stories:

1. Setting (Where and When)

• Look at the background
• Notice time indicators (sun, clock, etc.)
• Identify the location

2. Characters (Who)

• Count the people or animals
• Notice their expressions and actions
• Think about their relationships

3. Action (What is happening)

• Observe what each character is doing
• Look for movement or gestures
• Notice cause and effect

4. Problem and Solution

• Identify any conflict or challenge
• Look for how it gets resolved
• Notice the outcome

Sample Picture Analysis:

Picture: A boy helping an elderly woman carry her shopping bags across a busy street.

Key Points:

• Setting: Busy street with traffic, daytime
• Characters: Young boy (about 10 years old), elderly woman with walking stick
• Action: Boy is holding woman’s arm and carrying her bags
• Problem: Woman struggling to cross street safely
• Solution: Kind boy offers help

Story: “Yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Adebayo was returning from the market with heavy shopping bags. When she reached the busy main road, she felt worried about crossing safely. A kind Primary 6 student named Tunde noticed her difficulty and immediately offered to help. He carefully took her bags and guided her across the street. Mrs. Adebayo thanked him warmly, and Tunde felt proud that he had helped someone in need.”
