Topic: Speech Work Making Polite Requests

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

  1. Hold polite conversations.
  2. Make polite requests.
  3. Use can, could, may, would, please in request sentences.

The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:

  1. Course book
  1. Materials prepared by the teacher – passages from drama that will serve as model
  2. Sentences strips
  3. Relevant pictures and objects

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or draw them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

FOCUS REQUESTS

MAKING POLITE REQUESTS USING PLEASE, MAY, CAN, WOULD…

If you want other people to do things for you, you may want to sound polite. There are certain expressions you could uses.

For example;

  1. Please open the door.
  2. Could you open the door?
  3. Can I have the bill, please?
  4. May I have the bill, please?
  5. Could I possible have the bill please?
  6. Will you send me the materials?

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks questions. 
  2. Explains polite/polite asking arising from english customs. For example, english peoples seldom forms their commands, instead of saying – come here, they would rather say, can you spare a moment? please. 

Pupil’s Activities – Practice saying May I be excused, please (means I want to go to the toilet). Can I go, please. (eg in meaningful contexts such as, may I have a word with you please.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
