Set Induction: The teacher will begin the lesson by asking pupils to read a short passage and identify the main idea, then ask them to find supporting details that help them understand the main idea better.

Content:

Main Idea: It tells what the passage is mainly about. It is the most important idea in the passage.

Supporting Details: These are the facts, examples, and other information that help explain the main idea.

How to find the main idea and supporting details:

  1. Read the passage carefully
  2. Ask yourself: “What is this passage mostly about?”
  3. Look for the sentence or sentences that tell you what the whole passage is about
  4. Supporting details usually come before or after the main idea

Example:

Dogs make great pets. They are loyal and loving. Dogs can protect your home and family. Many dogs like to play fetch and go for walks. Dogs need food, water, and exercise every day.

Main Idea: Dogs make great pets.

Supporting Details: • They are loyal and loving • Dogs can protect your home and family • Many dogs like to play fetch and go for walks • Dogs need food, water, and exercise every day

Comprehension Passage:

The butterfly is one of the most beautiful creatures in nature. Butterflies come in many different colors like orange, yellow, blue, and red. They have four wings that help them fly from flower to flower. Butterflies start their life as caterpillars. The caterpillar eats leaves and grows bigger. Then it makes a cocoon around itself. After some time, a beautiful butterfly comes out of the cocoon. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers. They are important because they help flowers make seeds by carrying pollen from one flower to another.
