Topic: National Social Service Institutions

Behavioural Objectives By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify and spell National Social Service institutions in Nigeria.
  2. Explain the functions of National Social Service institutions like ICPC, EFCC, INEC, NAFDAC, NDLEA, NEMA.
  3. Give names and descriptions of these institutions in sentences.
  4. Use correctly each of the names played by these institutions in Nigeria.

Keywords • Institution: An established organization or foundation, especially one dedicated to education, public service, or culture. 

  • Social service: Services intended to promote the welfare of others, especially those provided by government. 
  • Anti-corruption and graft practices 
  • Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC): The organization responsible for ensuring safety on Nigerian roads. 
  • Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC): A body dedicated to fighting corruption in Nigeria. 
  • National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC): The agency responsible for regulating food, drugs, and other related products in Nigeria. 
  • National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA): The agency responsible for fighting drug trafficking and use of illegal drugs. 
  • National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA): An agency responsible for disaster preparedness and emergency management in Nigeria.

Set Induction Start the lesson by asking pupils if they know any government agencies that help people in different areas of life, living examples of the institutions with their work and responsibilities.

Entry Behaviour Pupils may have heard of some of these institutions but may not fully understand their functions.

Building Background/Connection to Prior Knowledge Discuss how these institutions play a role in the progress and law such as ensuring the safety of food, combating crimes and fighting corruption.

  1. Identifying and Listing National Social Service Institutions Vocabulary Key institutions include ICPC, EFCC, INEC, NAFDAC, NDLEA, and NEMA. 
  2. Explaining the Functions of National Social Service Institutions • ICPC (Independent Corrupt Practices Commission): Fights against corruption and other fraudulent practices. • EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission): Focuses on economic and financial crimes. • ICPC: Fights against corruption within the public and private sectors. • NAFDAC: Regulates the safety of foods and drug and other related products. • NDLEA: Works to combat illegal drug use and trafficking. • NEMA: Manages disasters and coordinates emergency responses in Nigeria. 
  3. Giving Names and Descriptions in Sentences • Example: “The FRSC ensures that drivers follow traffic rules to prevent accidents.” • Example: “NAFDAC checks that the medicine we buy are safe to use.” 
  4. Discussing Roles Descriptions on the Roles of Institutions • Write and talk about short sentences to give a brief role of these institutions in Nigerian society. 

Presentation

Step 1: Introduction • The teacher introduces the topic by discussing the importance of national social service institutions in Nigeria.

Teacher’s Activities: • Explain the new vocabulary words on flashcards and discuss their meanings. • List examples. • Help summarize and repeat the words after the teacher.

Step 2: Vocabulary Development • The teacher explains the definition of each institution in detail, using examples and relevant information.

Teacher’s Activities: • Write the important words/definitions on the board, provide definitions, and give examples in sentences.

Learners’ Activities: • Write down new words and construct their own sentences using the names of the institutions.

  • Describe one way NDLEA serves Nigerians. • Write a short paragraph about how FRSC ensures road safety.

Conclusion The teacher encourages pupils to ask questions, providing feedback and making necessary connections.
