Causes of Ethnicity – Basic 4 Civic Education Lesson Note (Third Term)

What Does “Causes of Ethnicity” Mean?

This means how different ethnic groups came to exist and why we have many ethnic groups in Nigeria.

How Ethnic Groups Formed

1. MIGRATION (MOVEMENT) 🚶‍♂️

What happened: People moved to different places long ago

• Searched for farmland
• Looked for water
• Escaped from wars
• Found new homes

Result: Groups settled in different areas and developed their own ways

2. GEOGRAPHICAL SEPARATION 🏔️

What happened: Natural barriers separated people

• Rivers divided groups
• Mountains blocked movement
• Forests kept people apart
• Deserts created boundaries

Result: Groups couldn’t mix easily, so they developed differently

3. DIFFERENT LANGUAGES 🗣️

What happened: Groups developed separate languages

• Couldn’t understand each other
• Created own words
• Passed language to children
• Language kept them distinct

Result: Language differences created ethnic identities

4. ISOLATION OVER TIME ⏰

What happened: Groups lived apart for hundreds of years

• No phones or cars then
• Difficult to travel
• Married within groups
• Kept to themselves

Result: Each group became unique

5. DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS 🌍

What happened: Areas had different resources

• North: Dry land → cattle rearing
• South: Rivers → fishing
• Forest areas: Farming
• Different food → different cultures

Result: Environment shaped their way of life

6. HISTORICAL EVENTS 📚

What happened: Wars and kingdoms

• Different kingdoms formed
• Some groups conquered others
• Empires rose and fell
• Trade routes developed

Result: History shaped ethnic groups
