Why God Gives His Law to Us

God gives His law to us for these important reasons:

Because He Loves Us

• God cares about our well-being
• He wants to protect us from harm
• His laws keep us safe and happy
• Love motivates God to guide us

To Show Us How to Live

• God knows the best way for us to live
• His laws are like instructions for a good life
• They help us make wise choices
• They guide us in doing what is right

To Teach Us About God

To Help Us Know Right from Wrong

The Ten Commandments

God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Here they are:

Commandments About Our Relationship with God (1-4)

1. You shall have no other gods before Me

• Worship only the true God
• Don’t put anything above God in your life
• God should be first in everything

2. You shall not make idols

• Don’t worship statues, images, or objects
• Don’t bow down to false gods
• Only worship the living God

3. You shall not take God’s name in vain

• Don’t use God’s name in bad ways
• Don’t swear using God’s name
• Respect and honor God’s holy name

4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy

• Set aside one day each week for God
• Rest from work on the Sabbath
• Use this day to worship and honor God

Commandments About Our Relationship with Others (5-10)

5. Honor your father and mother

• Respect and obey your parents
• Take care of them when they are old
• Listen to their wise advice

6. You shall not murder

• Don’t kill other people
• Don’t hurt others physically
• Protect and value human life

7. You shall not commit adultery

• Be faithful to your husband or wife
• Keep marriage promises
• Respect the marriage of others

8. You shall not steal

• Don’t take things that belong to others
• Don’t cheat or rob people
• Respect other people’s property

9. You shall not bear false witness

• Don’t tell lies about other people
• Don’t spread rumors or gossip
• Always tell the truth

10. You shall not covet

• Don’t be jealous of what others have
• Be content with what God gives you
• Don’t want to take away others’ possessions

How to Remember the Ten Commandments

First Four – Love God:
