Location: In present-day Osun StateÂ

Why Ife Was Important:
- Home of Oduduwa – the first Yoruba king
- Beautiful artwork – made amazing bronze and brass sculptures

Location: Around present-day Oyo State Time Period: About 600 years ago Ruler: The Alaafin of Oyo Special Name: “The most powerful Yoruba empire”
Why Oyo Was Powerful:
- Strong army with horses and brave warriors
- Big territory – controlled many towns and villages
- Good trade – sold goods to other kingdoms
- Feared by enemies – other kingdoms respected their power

Oduduwa – Father of the Yoruba

- Who he was: First king of Ife
- What he did: Founded the Yoruba kingdom
- Why he’s important: All Yoruba kings trace their family to him
- Legend: Came down from heaven to create the first land
Shango – The Thunder King

- Who he was: Fourth king of Old Oyo Empire
- What he did: Made Oyo very powerful with his strong army
- Special power: Could control lightning and thunder
- After death: Became the god of thunder in Yoruba religion
Queen Moremi – The Brave Queen

- Who she was: Queen of Ife kingdom
- Her brave act: Sacrificed herself to save her people
- The enemy: Fought against the Igbo raiders who attacked Ife
- Why she’s remembered: Her courage saved many lives
Lisabi – The Freedom Fighter

- Who he was: Hero from Egba land (present-day Ogun State)
- What he fought for: Freedom from Oyo Empire’s control
- His method: Organized farmers to fight against unfair treatment
- Success: Helped his people gain independence
