What are Geopolitical Zones?

Geopolitical Zones are groups of states that are put together because they are:

  • Close to each other (neighbors)
  • Similar in culture and language
  • In the same part of Nigeria

Why We Have Zones:

  • To make governing easier
  • To share resources fairly
  • To bring similar states together
  • To help with development projects

 

The Six Geopolitical zones of Nigeria

  1. NORTH CENTRAL ZONE

States:

  • Abuja (FCT) – Our capital city
  • Benue State
  • Kogi State
  • Kwara State
  • Nasarawa State
  • Niger State
  • Plateau State

What Makes it Special:

  • Has our capital city Abuja
  • Called the “Middle Belt”
  • Has the River Niger

 

  1. NORTH EAST ZONE

States:

  • Adamawa State
  • Bauchi State
  • Borno State
  • Gombe State
  • Taraba State
  • Yobe State

What Makes it Special:

  • In the far north east of Nigeria
  • Shares borders with other countries
  • Has desert areas

 

  1. NORTH WEST ZONE

States:

  • Jigawa State
  • Kaduna State
  • Kano State
  • Katsina State
  • Kebbi State
  • Sokoto State
  • Zamfara State

What Makes it Special:

  • Has seven states (most states)
  • Very far north of Nigeria
  • Has big cities like Kano and Kaduna

 

  1. SOUTH EAST ZONE

States:

  • Abia State
  • Anambra State
  • Ebonyi State
  • Enugu State
  • Imo State

What Makes it Special:

  • Has five states (smallest zone by number)
  • Home of Igbo people mainly
  • Has coal in Enugu

 

  1. SOUTH SOUTH ZONE

States:

  • Akwa Ibom State
  • Bayelsa State
  • Cross River State
  • Delta State
  • Edo State
  • Rivers State

What Makes it Special:

  • Near the Atlantic Ocean
  • Has oil and gas
  • Has many rivers
  • Has Port Harcourt (big city)

 

  1. SOUTH WEST ZONE

States:

  • Ekiti State
  • Lagos State
  • Ogun State
  • Ondo State
  • Osun State
  • Oyo State

What Makes it Special:

  • Has Lagos (biggest city in Nigeria)
  • Home of Yoruba people mainly
  • Very busy with business and trade

Total Number:

  • 6 zones in Nigeria
  • 36 states plus Abuja (FCT)
  • 37 states in total including FCT

Largest Zone by States: North West (7 states) 

Smallest Zone by States: South East (5 states) 

Zone with Capital: North Central (has Abuja)
