What is Order of Operations?

The order of operations tells us which calculations to do first when we have more than one operation in a problem.

BODMAS Rule

B – Brackets ( ) O – Of (powers/indices) D – Division ÷ M – Multiplication × A – Addition + S – Subtraction –

Remember: Always work from left to right when operations have the same priority.

Order of Operations with Whole Numbers

Example 1: 15 + 3 × 4

Step 1: Multiplication first (3 × 4 = 12)

Step 2: Then addition (15 + 12 = 27)

Answer: 27

Example 2: (8 + 2) × 6 – 15

Step 1: Brackets first (8 + 2 = 10)

Step 2: Multiplication (10 × 6 = 60)

Step 3: Subtraction (60 – 15 = 45)

Answer: 45

Example 3: 24 ÷ 6 + 3 × 5

Step 1: Division (24 ÷ 6 = 4)

Step 2: Multiplication (3 × 5 = 15)

Step 3: Addition (4 + 15 = 19)

Answer: 19

Exercise A – Whole Numbers

Order of Operations with Fractions

Example 1: 1/2 + 1/4 × 2

Step 1: Multiplication first (1/4 × 2 = 2/4 = 1/2)

Step 2: Addition (1/2 + 1/2 = 1)

Answer: 1

Example 2: (3/4 – 1/4) × 2/3

Step 1: Brackets first (3/4 – 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2)

Step 2: Multiplication (1/2 × 2/3 = 2/6 = 1/3)

Answer: 1/3

Example 3: 2/3 ÷ 1/3 + 1/2

Step 1: Division first (2/3 ÷ 1/3 = 2/3 × 3/1 = 2)

Step 2: Addition (2 + 1/2 = 2 1/2)

Answer: 2 1/2

Exercise B – Fractions

Solve using BODMAS:

  1. 1/3 + 1/2 × 2 = ______
  2. (1/2 + 1/4) ÷ 3 = ______
  3. 3/4 – 1/4 × 2 = ______
  4. 2/3 × 3/4 + 1/6 = ______
  5. (5/6 – 1/3) × 2 = ______
  6. 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4 – 1/2 = ______
  7. 2/5 + 1/2 × 4/5 = ______
  8. (3/4 + 1/4) ÷ 1/2 = ______

Order of Operations with Decimals

Example 1: 2.5 + 1.2 × 3

Step 1: Multiplication first (1.2 × 3 = 3.6)

Step 2: Addition (2.5 + 3.6 = 6.1)

Answer: 6.1

Example 2: (4.8 – 1.8) ÷ 2

Step 1: Brackets first (4.8 – 1.8 = 3.0)

Step 2: Division (3.0 ÷ 2 = 1.5)

Answer: 1.5

Example 3: 6.4 ÷ 1.6 + 2.5 × 2

Step 1: Division (6.4 ÷ 1.6 = 4)

Step 2: Multiplication (2.5 × 2 = 5)

Step 3: Addition (4 + 5 = 9)

Answer: 9

Exercise C – Decimals

Solve using BODMAS:

  1. 3.5 + 2.1 × 2 = ______
  2. (7.2 – 3.2) ÷ 4 = ______
  3. 8.4 – 1.2 × 3 = ______
  4. 9.6 ÷ 2.4 + 1.5 = ______
  5. (5.5 + 2.5) × 0.5 = ______
  6. 12.8 ÷ 3.2 – 1.8 = ______
  7. 4.6 + 3.4 × 1.5 = ______
  8. (10.5 – 4.5) ÷ 1.5 = ______

Mixed Operations

Example: 15 + 1/2 × 4 – 2.5

Step 1: Multiplication (1/2 × 4 = 2)

Step 2: Work left to right (15 + 2 – 2.5)

Step 3: Addition (15 + 2 = 17)

Step 4: Subtraction (17 – 2.5 = 14.5)

Answer: 14.5
