What is Approximation?
Approximation means finding a value that is close to the exact answer but easier to work with. We use approximation to make quick calculations and check if our answers are reasonable.
What is Estimation?
Estimation is making a sensible guess about the size, amount, or value of something without calculating the exact answer.
- Approximation of Whole Numbers
Rounding to Nearest 10
Rule: Look at the units digit
- If 5 or more, round up
- If less than 5, round down
Examples:
- 27 → 30 (7 ≥ 5, round up)
- 43 → 40 (3 < 5, round down)
- 65 → 70 (5 = 5, round up)
Rounding to Nearest 100
Rule: Look at the tens digit
Examples:
- 156 → 200 (5 ≥ 5, round up)
- 234 → 200 (3 < 5, round down)
- 289 → 300 (8 ≥ 5, round up)
Rounding to Nearest 1000
Rule: Look at the hundreds digit
Examples:
- 2,567 → 3,000 (5 ≥ 5, round up)
- 4,234 → 4,000 (2 < 5, round down)
- 8,750 → 9,000 (7 ≥ 5, round up)

- Approximation of Decimal Numbers
Rounding to Nearest Whole Number
Rule: Look at the first decimal place (tenths)
Examples:
- 4.7 → 5 (7 ≥ 5, round up)
- 8.3 → 8 (3 < 5, round down)
- 12.5 → 13 (5 = 5, round up)
Rounding to 1 Decimal Place
Rule: Look at the second decimal place (hundredths)
Examples:
- 3.46 → 3.5 (6 ≥ 5, round up)
- 7.23 → 7.2 (3 < 5, round down)
- 9.85 → 9.9 (5 = 5, round up)
Rounding to 2 Decimal Places
Rule: Look at the third decimal place (thousandths)
Examples:
- 5.678 → 5.68 (8 ≥ 5, round up)
- 2.453 → 2.45 (3 < 5, round down)
- 8.235 → 8.24 (5 = 5, round up)

Estimation in Calculations
Addition Estimation
Example: 267 + 189 + 345 Estimate: 300 + 200 + 300 = 800 Exact: 801
Subtraction Estimation

Multiplication Estimation
Example: 23 × 47 Estimate: 20 × 50 = 1,000 Exact: 1,081
Division Estimation
