a. Reading and Writing Numbers in Millions up to Billions

Understanding Large Numbers

When we count beyond thousands, we move to millions and billions. Each group of three digits represents a new period.

Number Periods:

  • Units: Ones, Tens, Hundreds
  • Thousands: Thousands, Ten thousands, Hundred thousands
  • Millions: Millions, Ten millions, Hundred millions
  • Billions: Billions, Ten billions, Hundred billions

Place Value Chart:

Examples of Reading Numbers:

  1. 5,234,567
  • Reading: Five million, two hundred and thirty-four thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven

  • Reading: Three billion
  1. 25,600,000,000
  • Reading: Twenty-five billion, six hundred million

Writing Numbers in Figures:

Examples:

  • Seven million, five hundred thousand = 7,500,000
  • Forty-three billion, two hundred million = 43,200,000,000
  • Six million, twenty-five thousand, four hundred = 6,025,400

b. Skip Counting in Thousands, Millions and Billions

What is Skip Counting?

Skip counting means counting by a certain number each time instead of counting by ones.

Skip Counting by Thousands:

Examples:

  • Count by 1,000: 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000…
  • Count by 5,000: 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 25,000…
  • Count by 10,000: 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, 50,000…

Skip Counting by Millions:

Examples:

  • Count by 1 million: 1,000,000, 2,000,000, 3,000,000…
  • Count by 5 million: 5,000,000, 10,000,000, 15,000,000…
  • Count by 10 million: 10,000,000, 20,000,000, 30,000,000…

Skip Counting by Billions:

Examples:

  • Count by 1 billion: 1,000,000,000, 2,000,000,000, 3,000,000,000…
  • Count by 2 billion: 2,000,000,000, 4,000,000,000, 6,000,000,000…

c. Place Value and Value of Whole Numbers

Understanding Place Value

The place value of a digit depends on its position in the number. The value is what the digit is actually worth in that position.

Place Value Chart Example: 5,234,567,890

Breaking it down:

  • 5 is in the billions place = 5,000,000,000
  • 2 is in the hundred millions place = 200,000,000
  • 3 is in the ten millions place = 30,000,000
  • 4 is in the millions place = 4,000,000
  • 5 is in the hundred thousands place = 500,000
  • 6 is in the ten thousands place = 60,000
  • 7 is in the thousands place = 7,000
  • 8 is in the hundreds place = 800
  • 9 is in the tens place = 90
  • 0 is in the units place = 0

Standard Form vs Expanded Form:

Standard Form: 45,678,230 

Expanded Form: 40,000,000 + 5,000,000 + 600,000 + 70,000 + 8,000 + 200 + 30
