Topic: Elements Of Culture

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Mention elements of culture
  • Compare the elements of culture among the three major cultural groups in Nigeria

Elements of Culture

Elements are the different parts that make up culture. Let’s learn about them:

1. Language

This is how people speak and communicate.

  • Hausa: Speak Hausa language

  • Yoruba: Speak Yoruba language

  • Igbo: Speak Igbo language

2. Food and Eating Habits

Different cultures have different foods they love.

  • Hausa: Tuwo, Suya, Fura da Nono, Masa
  • Yoruba: Pounded yam, Egusi soup, Amala, Jollof rice
  • Igbo: Bitter leaf soup, Oha soup, Yam, Ukwa

3. Clothing and Dressing

Each culture has special ways of dressing.

  • Hausa: Long flowing robes, turbans, veils
  • Yoruba: Agbada, Gele, Iro and Buba
  • Igbo: Isiagu, colorful wrappers, George fabric

4. Festivals and Celebrations

  • Hausa: Eid celebrations, Durbar festival
  • Yoruba: Osun festival, Egungun festival
  • Igbo: New Yam festival, Igbo Day

5. Music and Dance

  • Hausa: Talking drums, Kalangu
  • Yoruba: Bata drums, Dundun, Sekere
  • Igbo: Ogene, Ekwe, Udu

6. Greetings

  • Hausa: Kneel or bow slightly
  • Yoruba: Prostrate (men) or kneel (women)
  • Igbo: Handshake or slight bow

7. Religion and Beliefs

  • All three cultures practice Christianity, Islam, or traditional religions
  • They have different ways of worshipping
