The Art of Planting
Once the land is cleared, ploughed, and ridged, it is time for the most exciting part: Planting.
Planting is more than just throwing seeds on the ground. It is an “operation” that requires precision. If you get the planting wrong, the rest of the season will be a struggle. To be successful, a horticulturist must master three things:
- Timing (When to plant)
- Depth (How deep to go)
- Spacing (How much room to give)
Think of it like putting a baby to bed; if the bed is too deep, the baby can’t breathe; if it’s too crowded, the baby can’t grow.
Timing (The “When”)
In Nigeria, our “clock” is the rain. Timing is the most important factor because seeds need moisture to wake up (germinate).
- Early Planting
This is usually done at the very start of the rainy season (March/April in the South).
- Benefit: Your crops get the full benefit of the rains and are ready for harvest when food prices are high.
- Risk: If the rains stop suddenly (“April drought”), the young plants might die.
- Late Planting
Done towards the end of the rains (August/September).
- Benefit: Good for crops that need dry weather to ripen, like Cowpea (Beans).
- The “Cool” Rule
For horticultural crops like tomatoes or peppers, we never plant (or transplant) in the heat of the afternoon sun. We do it early in the morning or late in the evening to prevent the plants from “fainting” (wilting).
Planting Depth (The “How Deep”)
The general rule in agriculture is: The smaller the seed, the shallower the hole.
- Why Depth Matters
- Too Deep: The tiny plant uses up all its energy trying to push through the soil and dies before it reaches the sun.
- Too Shallow: Birds might eat the seed, or the sun might dry it out before it grows.
- Examples
- Small Seeds (Tomato, Pepper, Onion): These should be barely covered with a thin layer of soil (about 1cm to 2cm).
- Medium Seeds (Maize, Beans): These go about 3cm to 5cm deep.
- Large Crops (Yam, Cassava): These are buried deeper because they need a lot of space to develop their tubers.
Spacing (The “How Far”)
Spacing is the distance between one plant and the next. We measure it in two ways:
- Within-row spacing: Distance between plants on the same ridge.
- Between-row spacing: Distance between one ridge and the next.
Why do we space plants?
- To Avoid Competition: Just like ten people can’t eat comfortably from one small plate, plants shouldn’t fight for the same water and nutrients.
- Air Flow: It allows breeze to move between plants, which prevents diseases (fungi).
- Easy Movement: It gives the farmer space to walk through and remove weeds without stepping on the crops.

As an SS1 student, you should know that every crop has its own “personal space” requirements. Here is a simple guide for some common Nigerian crops:

Final Pro-Tips:
- The “Water First” Rule: Always make sure the soil is moist before planting. Planting in bone-dry soil is a waste of seeds.
- Seed Rate: Usually, we plant 2 or 3 seeds per hole. If all of them grow, we “thin” them (remove the weakest) later to leave only the strongest one.
