Farming Where There is No Space
When we think of a farm, we usually imagine a vast piece of land in the village. But what happens if you live in a crowded city like Lagos, Kano, or Port Harcourt?
Urban Horticulture is growing plants within a city.
Peri-Urban Horticulture is growing plants on the outskirts (the edges) of the city.
Since space is expensive in the city, we have to get creative. We don’t need a “plot” of land; we just need a strategy.
Rooftop Gardens: The Farm in the Sky
A rooftop garden is exactly what it sounds like—growing vegetables, herbs, or flowers on the top of a building.
How to start one:
- Check the Strength: Before adding soil and water, you must be sure the roof can carry the weight.
- Waterproofing: You lay down a thick plastic sheet or special paint so water doesn’t leak into the rooms below.
- Containers: Most city farmers use pots, old tires, or wooden boxes filled with light soil or compost.
- Drainage: You must have a way for extra rainwater to flow away so the roof doesn’t become a swimming pool!
Why do it?
- It keeps the building cool (plants act as natural AC).
- It uses “dead space” that was doing nothing.
- It provides fresh “scent leaf,” tomatoes, or peppers right outside your door.
Hydroponics: Farming Without Soil
This is the most “high-tech” part of urban farming. Hydroponics is the science of growing plants in water instead of soil.
Wait, how do they stand up? Instead of soil, we use “anchors” like gravel, coconut husks, or even just holes in a plastic pipe.
How they eat: In a regular farm, plants “hunt” for nutrients in the dirt. In hydroponics, we mix the “plant food” (minerals like Nitrogen and Potassium) directly into the water. The roots sit in this “nutrient soup” and grow much faster because they don’t have to work hard to find food.
Common Systems:
- Wick System: A string pulls water up from a bucket to the plant (the simplest way).
- NFT (Nutrient Film Technique): Water flows like a tiny stream through a pipe, touching the tips of the roots.
Why Is This Important for Our Cities? (Benefits)
- Freshness: Food doesn’t have to travel for days in a hot truck from the village. It is harvested and eaten the same day.
- Income: A student or a mother can grow expensive spices or lettuce and sell them to neighbors or local supermarkets.
- Environment: Plants help clean the dirty city air and absorb carbon dioxide.
- Waste Management: We can use “grey water” (like water used to wash vegetables) to water the garden, and use kitchen waste to make compost.
The Challenges (The Reality Check)
It’s not always easy to be a city farmer:
- The Heat: Rooftops can get very hot. Without enough water, plants will dry up in a few hours.
- Startup Costs: Buying hydroponic pipes or waterproofing a roof can be expensive at the beginning.
- Water Supply: You need a steady supply of clean water. If the city water stops, the plants are in trouble.
- Pollution: If the building is near a very busy road, heavy dust and smoke from cars can settle on the leaves (so always wash your urban veggies well!).
Summary for the Student
Urban horticulture proves that you don’t need to be a “villager” to be a farmer. Whether you have a small balcony, a flat roof, or just a PVC pipe, you can produce food. It turns consumers into producers!
Teacher’s Practical Tip
Ask the students to bring an empty 2-liter plastic bottle to the next class. We can cut them in half, turn the top upside down into the bottom, and create a simple “Wick System” hydroponic pot to grow a single fluted pumpkin (Ugu) leaf or a pepper seedling.
