Peace Education – SS3 Government Lesson Note (First Term)

Peace is the state of being calm and quiet, of living in friendship with others without argument or violence, and of being free from war. Peace education is a way of changing behaviour and attitude so that conflicts are prevented and resolved and peace is promoted. Peace is needed for the development and progress of society.

2. State and describe the types of conflict.
3. Name some causes of conflict.
4. Discuss the consequences of conflict.
5. Describe some ways of resolving conflict.

What is peace?

Peace is the state of being calm and quiet. It is a state or quality of living in friendship with somebody without argument. It is a state in which one is not involved in causing argument or violence. It is freedom from war.

Peace is also the ability to accept other people’s behaviour, or better still, to tolerate one another’s attitude without complaining.

What is peace education?

Peace education is a behaviour and attitude change mechanism which aims at performing the following functions:

1. Preventing conflicts
2. Resolving conflicts
3. Promoting peace

Why do we need peace?

1. For the development of the society
2. To promote friendship
3. For the progress of the society

What are the mechanisms for promoting peace?

1. Promotion of friendship
2. Justice
3. Good leadership
