Topic: PV System Installation Steps I

Preparation – Safety and Site Set-up

Before we climb any ladder, we must remember that a solar panel is like a giant sail. If the wind catches it while you are on the roof, it can pull you off.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
  • Safety Boots: To avoid slipping on the roof.
  • Hand Gloves: Solar panels get very hot in the Nigerian sun!
  • Safety Harness: A rope that ties you to the building so you don’t fall.
  1. Organizing the “Work Zone”: Don’t just scatter tools everywhere. Keep your batteries in a cool, dry place and keep your panels in their boxes until the moment they are ready to go up.

 

Step 1 – Mounting the Panels (The Foundation)

The goal is to make sure the panels stay on the roof for 25 years without moving, even during the heaviest rainstorm.

  1. Fixing the Rails: We don’t just screw panels into the roof. We install Aluminum Rails first. These rails are bolted into the wooden or metal beams (purlins) under the roofing sheets.
  • Tip: Always use a Spirit Level to make sure the rails are straight.
  1. Laying the Panels: We lift the panels carefully and place them on the rails. We use End Clamps and Mid Clamps to “pinch” the panels tightly onto the rails.
  • Direction Check: Use your compass one last time to make sure they are facing South.

 

Step 2 – Installing the “Balance of System” (BOS)

“Balance of System” is just a professional way of saying “everything else except the panels.” This includes the Inverter, the Controller, and the Protection boxes.

  1. Mounting the Inverter and Controller:
  • Location: They must be in a well-ventilated room. These machines get hot when they work. Never hide them in a tiny cupboard without air!
  • Height: Mount them at eye level so you can easily read the screens and see if there is an error.
  1. The Distribution Board (DB Box): We install a small plastic or metal box near the inverter. This is where we put our Circuit Breakers and Surge Protectors. It keeps the “safety guards” all in one place.

 

Step 3 – Management of Cables (The Veins)

If your wires look like a “plate of noodles” (tangled), the system will be hard to fix later and could be dangerous.

  1. Using Conduits: On the roof, we put wires inside flexible pipes. This protects them from the sun and from being rubbed against sharp roof edges.
  2. Entering the House: When the wires come from the roof into the house, we use a “Drip Loop.” This is a small curve in the wire that makes rain-water fall off the wire onto the ground instead of following the wire inside the house to soak your inverter.
  3. Trunking: Inside the house, use white plastic covers (trunking) to hide the wires along the wall. It makes the job look like a professional did it!

 

Summary and Class Activity

The Installer’s “Three Golden Rules”

  1. Never walk on the panels: You might not see a crack, but you will break the tiny “cells” inside.
  2. Tighten every screw: A loose screw creates heat, and heat creates fire.
  3. Stay Clean: Use a soft cloth to wipe your fingerprints off the panels once you are done.

Class Practical Activity

  1. The Spirit Level Challenge: Practice using a spirit level on a desk or a window frame. If the “bubble” is in the middle, it’s straight.
  2. Tool Identification: Lay out a spanner, a screwdriver, a clamp, and a rail. Can the students name them and explain what they do on the roof?
  3. The “Drip Loop” Drawing: Ask the students to draw a house with a solar panel and show how the wire should enter the wall so that rain doesn’t get inside.
