What is Digital Storage?
Think of your computer or phone like a desk. The “RAM” is the surface of the desk where you do your work right now. But Storage is the drawer where you put things away so you can find them tomorrow.
Definition: Digital storage is the technology that holds your files, photos, and apps even when the power is turned off. Without storage, your computer would “forget” everything every time you restarted it.
How We Measure Storage
We measure storage in Bytes.
- Small: Kilobytes (KB) – like a text file.
- Medium: Megabytes (MB) – like a song or a photo.
- Large: Gigabytes (GB) – like a movie or a big game.
- Huge: Terabytes (TB) – used for storing thousands of movies.
Local Storage (The Physical Tools)
Local storage refers to devices you can physically hold in your hand or that are inside your machine.
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD): This is the traditional storage found inside most desktop computers. It has spinning disks inside.
- Solid State Drive (SSD): This is the modern version. It has no moving parts, so it is much faster and harder to break than an HDD.
- Flash Drives (USB Sticks): Small, portable sticks you carry in your pocket to move files between computers.
- Memory Cards (SD Cards): Tiny chips used in phones and cameras to expand their memory.
What is Cloud Computing?
In the past, if you left your flash drive at home, you couldn’t access your files. Cloud Computing fixed this.
The “Cloud” isn’t actually in the sky. It is simply a collection of massive, powerful computers (called Servers) located in giant data centers owned by companies like Google, Microsoft, or Amazon.
When you “save to the cloud,” you are sending your file over the internet to be stored on one of those giant computers. You can then “pull” that file down from any device, anywhere in the world, as long as you have internet.
Popular Cloud Services:
- Google Drive: Great for documents and school work.
- iCloud: Used by Apple users to save photos and phone backups.
- OneDrive: Microsoft’s storage system.
- Dropbox: A simple way to share large files with friends.
Advantages of the Cloud
Why are more people moving away from flash drives and using the cloud?
- Access Everywhere: You can start an essay on your school computer and finish it on your phone while on the bus.
- Safety from Physical Damage: If you spill water on your laptop and it breaks, your files are still safe in the cloud.
- Easy Sharing: Instead of copying a large video to a flash drive, you can just send a “link” to your friend.
- Automatic Backups: Most cloud services can be set to automatically save your photos as soon as you take them.
Teacher’s Note: Remind students that the only real “downside” to the cloud is that you need an internet connection to reach your files!
Data Backup (The “Safety Net”)
Imagine you spend three weeks writing a project, and then your phone is stolen or your computer crashes. If you didn’t have a Backup, that work is gone forever.
What is a Backup? A backup is a duplicate copy of your most important data stored in a different location.
The 3-2-1 Rule of Backup:
- 3 copies of your data (The original + two backups).
- 2 different types of storage (e.g., your Hard Drive and a Flash Drive).
- 1 copy stored “Off-site” (In the Cloud).
How to stay safe:
- Don’t wait for a “warning.” Back up your files once a week.
- Use passwords to protect your cloud accounts.
- Check your backups occasionally to make sure the files still open.
