In Nigeria, we all know that the “light” (electricity) isn’t always stable. For a computer or a phone repair lab, electricity isn’t just a luxury—it is the lifeblood of the business. However, “bad power” can destroy your expensive tools in a second.
Today, we are going to learn about the three “Bodyguards” of electronics: Stabilizers, UPS, and Inverters.
Why Do We Need “Bodyguards” for Power?
The electricity coming from the wall (NEPA/PHCN) or a generator isn’t always “clean.” It has three main problems:
- Surges (High Voltage): This is when the power suddenly jumps too high. It can “fry” the circuits inside a computer.
- Brownouts (Low Voltage): When the light is “dim.” The computer tries to work but doesn’t get enough “juice,” which can damage the motor in a hard drive.
- Blackouts: When the power goes off completely. This causes the computer to shut down instantly, which can corrupt your software and make you lose your work.
The Stabilizer (The Traffic Warden)
A Stabilizer is the most common tool we use. Its only job is to watch the incoming voltage and keep it at a steady level (usually 220V).
- How it works: If the power from the wall is too low, the stabilizer “boosts” it. If it is too high, it “trims” it down.
- The “Click” Sound: Have you ever heard your stabilizer make a click-click sound? That is the machine changing its internal gears to protect your TV or computer.
- Limitations: A stabilizer cannot keep your computer on when the lights go out. It only protects you while the power is actually there.
The UPS (The Emergency Reserve)
UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. Think of it as a Stabilizer with a small battery hidden inside.
- The Main Job: The moment the lights go out, the UPS takes over instantly. It doesn’t give the computer time to notice the power is gone.
- The “BEEP”: When the power fails, the UPS will start beeping. This is a warning to you: “Save your work and shut down now!”
- Time Limit: Most small UPS units only give you about 10 to 15 minutes of power. It is not for watching movies; it is for saving your work so your files don’t get corrupted.
The Inverter (The Long-Distance Runner)
If you want to work for hours after the power goes out, you need an Inverter.
- The Battery Bank: Unlike a UPS, an Inverter is connected to big, heavy batteries (like car batteries but bigger).
- Conversion: Batteries store power as DC (Direct Current), but computers need AC (Alternating Current). The Inverter “inverts” or changes the power from the battery so the computer can use it.
- Solar Connection: Many Inverters in Nigeria are now connected to Solar Panels on the roof. This allows you to charge your batteries using the sun during the day and use your computer all night for free!

As a technician, you need to advise your customers on what to buy based on their needs.

Safety Rules for Power Systems:
- Don’t Overload: If you plug a giant fridge into a small UPS meant for a computer, the UPS will “trip” or its battery will die instantly.
- Ventilation: These machines get hot while they work. Never cover them with a cloth or put them inside a tight cupboard.
- Battery Care: For Inverters, never let the batteries go completely empty (0%). It’s better to recharge them when they hit 20% to make them last for years.
Class Activity: Look at the labels on the back of the computers in the lab. Find the “Wattage” (e.g., 250W). Now, look at the Stabilizer. Can it handle that amount of power?
