This lesson is for every student who has ever been frustrated by the words “No Service” or “Emergency Calls Only.” As a technician, these are the calls you will get the most. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a settings change, and other times it involves opening the phone.

Let’s look at how to solve these connectivity puzzles.

The “No Service” Mystery

When a phone says “No Service,” it means the phone is “blind.” It can’t see any telecom masts nearby.

Common Reasons:

1. Distance: You are too far from a tower (like in a rural village or a deep basement).
2. Antenna Fault: Inside the phone, there is a long, thin wire that acts as the antenna. If the phone falls, this wire can pop off its connector. The phone is fine, but it has no “ears” to hear the network.
3. Network Congestion: Sometimes there are too many people using one tower (like at a stadium), and the network “ignores” new connections.

The First Step: Always toggle Airplane Mode on and off. This forces the phone to “wake up” and look for the towers again.

SIM Card Errors

“Invalid SIM,” “No SIM Card,” or “SIM Error” are messages that tell us the phone and the SIM card are not speaking the same language.

• Dirty Contacts: Look at the gold part of your SIM card. If you see black marks or fingerprints, the electricity cannot flow. Clean it gently with a pencil eraser or a cloth with a tiny bit of spirit.
• Bent Pins: Look inside the SIM slot of the phone. There are tiny, springy gold pins. If someone forced a SIM in the wrong way, these pins get bent or broken.
• The “Paper Trick”: Sometimes the SIM slot is loose. A small piece of folded paper placed on top of the SIM (the non-gold side) can help push it down onto the pins for a better connection.

Network Configuration (APN Settings)

Sometimes a phone can make calls, but it cannot browse the internet. This is usually a “Setting” problem, not a hardware problem.

The APN (Access Point Name): Think of the APN as a “Secret Password” that tells the network: “I am an MTN customer, please let me use your data.”

• If you buy a “London used” phone, it might still have the settings for a foreign network like O2 or Vodafone.
• The Fix: You must go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and manually type in the Nigerian settings (e.g., for MTN, the APN is usually just web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net).

The “Emergency Calls Only” Trap

This is a very specific error. It means the phone can see the towers, but the network is refusing to let the phone connect.

Why does this happen?

1. Unregistered SIM: In Nigeria, all SIM cards must be linked to a NIN. If the network blocks the SIM, you will see this error.
2. IMEI Block: If the phone was reported stolen, the network “Blacklists” the phone’s ID (IMEI). The phone will show bars, but it won’t let you call anyone.
3. Searching for a Specific Network: Sometimes the phone is set to “3G Only” but only “4G” is available in that area.

The Fix: Go to Network Settings and change “Preferred Network Type” to Auto or 4G/3G/2G.

Professional Troubleshooting Steps

When a customer brings a phone with network issues, follow this “Rule of Three”:

• Step 1: The SIM Swap. Put the customer’s SIM into your good phone. If it works, the problem is their phone. If it doesn’t work, the SIM is dead or blocked.
• Step 2: Check for Water. Water loves to hide in the charging port area where the antenna is located. If you see green “corrosion,” clean it with Isopropyl Alcohol.
• Step 3: The Factory Reset. If all else fails, the software might be confused. Reset the network settings or the whole phone to see if it clears the “glitch.”
