This lesson is all about “Prevention.” In Nigeria, our biggest enemies in the tech world are heat, dust, and humidity. If you don’t take care of your computer, it will eventually “choke” and die.

Maintenance isn’t just about fixing things when they break; it’s about making sure they stay healthy for a long time.

The Enemy Called Dust

Dust might look harmless, but inside a computer, it is a killer. It acts like a thick blanket that traps heat. When the CPU (the brain) gets too hot, the computer slows down to protect itself.

How to Clean Safely:

• The Blower: Use a can of compressed air or an electric blower to “scare” the dust out of the vents and fans. Always do this outdoors!
• Soft Brush: Use a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep dust off the motherboard.
• Microfiber Cloth: For the screen and the outer case, use a soft cloth. Never use a rough towel—it will scratch the screen.

Rule Number One: Never spray water or liquid cleaner directly onto the computer. Spray it on the cloth first!

Cooling Systems (Keeping it Chilled)

Computers are like people—they can’t work well if they are sweating! There are three main ways a computer stays cool:

1. Heat Sinks: These are the metal “fins” you see sitting on top of the CPU. They pull heat away from the chip.
2. Fans: These blow the hot air out of the case. If your fan sounds like a jet engine or is making a grinding noise, it needs cleaning or oiling.
3. Thermal Paste: This is a special grey “cream” that sits between the CPU and the Heat Sink. Over time, this paste gets dry and hard like a cracker. When that happens, it stops working.

Maintenance Task: Every 2 years, a professional should clean off the old paste and apply a fresh, pea-sized drop of new thermal paste.

Upgrading – Giving Your PC a “New Life”

Instead of throwing away an old, slow computer, you can “upgrade” it. This is like giving a car a more powerful engine.

The Top 3 Upgrades:

• RAM: If your computer “hangs” when you open many tabs, you need more RAM. It’s the easiest part to install—just a “snap” and you’re done.
• SSD (Solid State Drive): If your computer takes 5 minutes to turn on, swap your old Hard Drive for an SSD. It will make the computer feel 10 times faster instantly.
• Graphics Card: For students who want to do video editing or gaming, adding a dedicated graphics card helps the computer handle heavy pictures and videos.

Laptop-Specific Care

Laptops are more delicate than desktop computers because everything is “crammed” into a small space.

• Ventilation: Never use your laptop on a bed, pillow, or carpet. These soft surfaces block the vents at the bottom. The heat will have nowhere to go, and you might burn the motherboard. Use a hard table or a laptop stand.
• Battery Care: Don’t leave your laptop plugged in 24/7. Once it’s full, use it. If a battery stays at 100% all its life, it loses its “strength.”
• The Keyboard: Don’t eat “crumbly” food like biscuits over your laptop. Crumbs get stuck under the keys and are very hard to get out.

To be a good technician, you should follow a routine. Here is a simple plan:
