Topic: Ghusl (Ritual Bath)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. State the meaning and types of Ghusl
  2. Tell why Ghusl is performed
  3. Demonstrate how Ghusl is performed

LESSON CONTENT

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Greet pupils with “As-salamu alaikum”
  • Review previous lesson on Ayatul Kursi
  • Introduce today’s topic: Ghusl (Ritual Bath)

MEANING OF GHUSL

Ghusl is an Arabic word that means “washing” or “bathing.” In Islamic terms, Ghusl refers to the ritual washing of the entire body with clean water to achieve spiritual purity (Tahara) before performing certain acts of worship.

TYPES OF GHUSL

  1. Fard (Obligatory) Ghusl 
    1. Must be performed in certain situations
    2. Required before prayers and other religious acts
  2. Sunnah (Recommended) Ghusl 
    1. Recommended but not compulsory
    2. Brings extra spiritual rewards
  3. Mustahab (Preferred) Ghusl 
    1. Preferred for special occasions
    2. Shows extra devotion to Allah

WHY GHUSL IS PERFORMED

Obligatory Situations (Fard):

  1. After major impurity (Janaba)
  2. After menstruation (for women)
  3. After childbirth (for women)
  4. For new converts to Islam
  5. Before Friday prayers (recommended)

Recommended Situations (Sunnah):

  1. Before Eid prayers
  2. Before going to Hajj or Umrah
  3. On special Islamic occasions
  4. When entering Makkah
  5. For general cleanliness

HOW TO PERFORM GHUSL

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Make Intention (Niyyah)
  • Silently intend to perform Ghusl for purification
  • Say: “I intend to perform Ghusl to purify myself”
  1. Say Bismillah
  • Begin with “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim”
  1. Wash Hands
  • Wash both hands up to the wrists three times
  1. Wash Private Parts
  • Clean any impurities from the body
  • Wash private parts thoroughly
  1. Perform Wudu (Ablution)
  • Complete wudu as normal (except washing feet at this stage)
  1. Pour Water Over Head
  • Pour water over the head three times
  • Ensure water reaches the roots of hair
  1. Wash Right Side of Body
  • Pour water over right shoulder and wash entire right side
  • Make sure water reaches every part
  1. Wash Left Side of Body
  • Pour water over left shoulder and wash entire left side
  • Ensure complete coverage
  1. Wash Feet
  • Wash both feet thoroughly
  • Clean between toes
  1. Final Rinse
  • Pour water over entire body once more
  • Ensure no part is left dry

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

  1. Use Clean Water: Only pure, clean water should be used
  2. Complete Coverage: Every part of the body must be washed
  3. Proper Order: Follow the correct sequence
  4. Remove Barriers: Remove anything that prevents water from reaching the skin
  5. Privacy: Ghusl should be performed in private

CLASS ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Meaning and Types Discussion (8 minutes)

  • Ask pupils to define Ghusl in their own words
  • Discuss different types with examples
  • Use simple analogies to explain the concept

Activity 2: Reasons for Ghusl (7 minutes)

  • List situations when Ghusl is required
  • Explain the difference between obligatory and recommended
  • Give practical examples from daily life

Activity 3: Demonstration (15 minutes)

  • Teacher demonstrates the steps using a doll or drawing
  • Pupils practice the sequence without water
  • Emphasize proper order and thoroughness

  • Remind pupils that cleanliness is part of faith in Islam
  • Close with dua for purity

MORAL LESSON

Ghusl teaches us the importance of cleanliness in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said “Cleanliness is half of faith.” By performing Ghusl properly, we prepare ourselves physically and spiritually to worship Allah.
