UNDERSTANDING ANIMAL DISEASES

What is an Animal Disease?

An animal disease is any condition that affects the normal health and functioning of an animal’s body. When animals are diseased, they cannot perform their normal activities properly, and their productivity decreases.

What is Health?

Health is a state where an animal’s body functions normally without any sickness or disease. A healthy animal is active, eats well, grows properly, and produces well (eggs, milk, meat).

  • How they cause disease: They multiply rapidly in the animal’s body and produce toxins (poisons)
  • Examples of bacterial diseases:
    1. Fowl cholera in chickens

    3. Pneumonia in pigs

Viruses

  • What they are: Extremely small organisms that are smaller than bacteria
  • How they cause disease: They enter body cells and multiply inside them, damaging the cells
  • Examples of viral diseases:
    1. Newcastle disease in chickens
    2. Foot and mouth disease in cattle
    3. African swine fever in pigs

Fungi

  • What they are: Plant-like organisms that grow in warm, moist conditions
  • How they cause disease: They grow on or in animal tissues, causing infections
  • Examples of fungal diseases:
    1. Ringworm on skin of cattle and goats
    2. Aspergillosis in chickens (affects breathing)

Parasites

  • What they are: Living organisms that live in or on other animals
  • How they cause disease: They feed on the host animal, weakening it
  • Examples: Already covered in Week 8 (worms, lice, ticks, etc.)

2. Non-infectious Causes

Poor Nutrition

  • Malnutrition: Not getting enough food
  • Deficiency diseases: Lack of specific nutrients like vitamins or minerals
  • Examples:
    1. Rickets from lack of vitamin D
    2. Anemia from lack of iron
    3. Night blindness from lack of vitamin A

Poor Management

  • Overcrowding: Too many animals in small spaces
  • Poor ventilation: Not enough fresh air
  • Stress: Caused by rough handling, noise, or sudden changes
  • Inadequate housing: Buildings that don’t protect animals properly

Environmental Factors

  • Extreme weather: Too hot, too cold, or too much rain
  • Poor water quality: Dirty or contaminated water
  • Toxic substances: Poisonous plants, chemicals, or moldy feeds
  • Accidents: Injuries from sharp objects or fighting

COMMON DISEASES OF FARM ANIMALS

POULTRY DISEASES (Chickens, Ducks, Turkeys)

1. Newcastle Disease

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: All poultry, especially chickens
  • What it does:
    1. Affects the nervous system and breathing
    2. Causes twisted necks and paralysis
    3. High death rate
  • How it spreads: Through air, contaminated equipment, infected birds

2. Fowl Pox

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Chickens, turkeys
  • What it does:
    1. Causes sores on the skin and inside the mouth
    2. Reduces egg production
    3. Makes it difficult for birds to eat and drink
  • How it spreads: Through mosquitoes and direct contact

3. Coccidiosis

  • Cause: Protozoa (microscopic parasites)
  • Animals affected: All poultry, especially young birds
  • What it does:
    • Causes bloody diarrhea
    • Leads to dehydration and weakness
    • High death rate in young chickens
  • How it spreads: Through contaminated water, feed, and droppings

4. Fowl Cholera

  • Cause: Bacteria
  • Animals affected: Chickens, ducks, turkeys
  • What it does:
    1. Causes sudden death in adult birds
    2. Yellow-colored diarrhea
    3. Difficulty breathing
  • How it spreads: Through contaminated water and feed

CATTLE DISEASES

1. Foot and Mouth Disease

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs
  • What it does:

Causes blisters on mouth, feet, and udder

Makes animals unable to eat or walk properly

Reduces milk production significantly

  • How it spreads: Very contagious, spreads through air and contact

2. Mastitis

  • Cause: Bacteria
  • Animals affected: Dairy cows, goats
  • What it does:
    1. Infection of the udder
    2. Reduces milk quality and quantity
    3. Milk may contain blood or pus

3. Anthrax

  • Animals affected: Cattle, sheep, goats, horses
  • What it does:
    1. Causes sudden death

    3. Very dangerous to humans too
  • How it spreads: Through contaminated soil and feed

PIG DISEASES

1. African Swine Fever

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Pigs only
  • What it does:
    1. Causes high fever and death
    2. Almost 100% death rate
    3. No treatment available
  • How it spreads: Through infected pigs, contaminated equipment

2. Swine Flu

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Pigs
  • What it does:
    1. Causes coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing
    2. Reduces growth rate
    3. Can spread to humans
  • How it spreads: Through air droplets and direct contact

GOAT AND SHEEP DISEASES

1. Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR)

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Goats and sheep
  • What it does:
    1. Causes fever, diarrhea, and mouth sores
    2. High death rate
    3. Reduces growth and milk production
  • How it spreads: Through direct contact and air droplets

2. Pneumonia

  • Cause: Bacteria or viruses
  • Animals affected: All animals, especially young ones
  • What it does:
    1. Affects the lungs
    2. Causes difficulty breathing and coughing
    3. Can cause death if not treated
  • How it spreads: Through air droplets and stress factors

RABBIT DISEASES

1. Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Rabbits only
  • What it does:
    1. Causes sudden death
    2. Internal bleeding
    3. Very high death rate
  • How it spreads: Through direct contact and contaminated equipment

2. Myxomatosis

  • Cause: Virus
  • Animals affected: Rabbits
  • What it does:
    1. Causes swelling around eyes and face
    2. Makes eating and seeing difficult
    3. Usually fatal
  • How it spreads: Through fleas, mosquitoes, and direct contact

 

FACTORS THAT INCREASE DISEASE RISK

Environmental Factors

  • Poor sanitation – dirty animal houses and equipment
