Fourth Rightly Guided Caliph
Life History
Before Islam
- Born in: Makkah around 599 CE
- Family: Cousin of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
- Father: Abu Talib (Prophet’s uncle)
- Lived in: Prophet’s house as a child
- Character: Very brave, intelligent, and strong
Becoming Muslim
- First young person to accept Islam
- Was only 10 years old when he became Muslim
- Grew up with the Prophet like a son
- Always protected and supported the Prophet
Before Becoming Caliph
- Married Prophet’s daughter Fatimah
- Had two sons: Hassan and Hussein
- Very brave warrior – won many battles for Islam
- Close advisor to previous Caliphs
- Known for his wisdom and knowledge
Becoming Caliph
- Became Caliph after Uthman was killed in 656 CE
- Many people chose him as the new leader
- Ruled for 5 years (656-661 CE)
- Was 57 years old when he became Caliph
Challenges During His Rule
Difficult Times:
- Civil war broke out among Muslims
- Some people did not accept his leadership
- Had to fight three major battles:
- Battle of Jamal (Camel)
- Battle of Siffin
- Battle of Nahrawan
Why there were problems:
- People disagreed about who killed Uthman
- Some wanted revenge for Uthman’s death
- Different groups had different opinions
Major Achievements as Caliph
- Tried to Bring Peace
- Worked hard to unite Muslims again
- Forgave many of his enemies
- Always tried to solve problems peacefully first
- Fair and Just Leadership
- Equal treatment for all people
- Gave back stolen money to rightful owners
- Simple lifestyle – lived like ordinary people
- Shared wealth fairly among Muslims
- Great Knowledge and Wisdom
- Excellent judge – solved difficult cases
- Deep knowledge of Quran and Islamic law
- Taught many students who became great scholars
- Famous for his wise sayings
- Moved Capital
- Moved capital from Madinah to Kufa (Iraq)
- This helped him manage the empire better
- Kufa became an important center of learning
His Character
Known for:
- Great bravery in battles
- Deep wisdom and knowledge
- Simple living despite being Caliph
- Kind heart – helped poor people
- Strong faith in Allah
Famous for:
- “Lion of Allah” – very brave
- Great speaker – gave powerful speeches
- Fair judge – always chose justice
- Loving father and husband
End of His Life
- Killed while praying in mosque in 661 CE
- A bad man attacked him with a sword
- Died serving Islam till the end
- His death ended the period of Rightly Guided Caliphs
