What is Agriculture?

Agriculture is the practice of growing crops (plants) and raising animals for food, clothing, and other useful things.

Simple Definition

Agriculture means farming – growing plants and keeping animals to provide what people need.

Parts of Agriculture

  1. Crop Production

Growing plants for food and other uses

  • Food crops: Rice, yam, cassava, maize, beans
  • Cash crops: Cocoa, cotton, palm oil
  • Vegetables: Tomatoes, pepper, onions, lettuce
  • Fruits: Oranges, mangoes, bananas, pineapples
  1. Animal Husbandry (Livestock)

Raising animals for various purposes

  • For food: Cattle (beef), goats, chickens, fish
  • For milk: Cows, goats
  • For eggs: Chickens, ducks
  • For work: Horses, oxen (helping with farm work)
  1. Other Agricultural Activities
  • Forestry: Growing trees for wood and paper
  • Fishing: Catching fish from rivers and ponds
  • Beekeeping: Raising bees for honey

Importance of Agriculture

  1. Provides Food
  • Gives us our daily meals
  • Supplies fruits, vegetables, grains, and meat
  • Feeds the whole population
  • Prevents hunger and starvation
  1. Provides Raw Materials
  • Cotton for making clothes
  • Wood for building houses and furniture
  • Rubber for making tires and shoes
  • Palm oil for cooking and soap
  1. Creates Jobs
  • Farmers work on the land
  • People sell farm products in markets
  • Food processing companies employ many people
  • Transportation of farm goods creates jobs
  1. Earns Money for the Country
  • Nigeria exports crops like cocoa and palm oil
  • Farmers sell products and earn income
  • Supports the national economy
  • Brings foreign exchange
  1. Keeps Us Healthy
  • Fresh vegetables and fruits provide vitamins
  • Natural foods are better than processed foods
  • Helps people stay strong and healthy
  1. Protects the Environment
  • Trees prevent soil erosion
  • Plants clean the air we breathe
  • Helps maintain good climate
  • Provides homes for wild animals
