Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

• Know how to walk safely along roads
• Know the correct way to cross roads
• Understand traffic light signals

Introduction:

Hello children! Today we will learn very important safety rules for walking and crossing roads. These rules will keep us safe when we are outside our homes and school.

Lesson Content:

WALKING ALONG THE ROADS:

Where to Walk Safely:

1. Use Footpaths/Sidewalks:

   1. Always walk on the footpath when available
   2. Stay away from the road where cars drive
   3. Walk in single file when in groups
   4. Do not run or play on footpaths

2. When There is No Footpath:

   1. Walk on the left side of the road
   2. Face the oncoming traffic (walk towards cars)
   3. Stay as far from the road as possible
   4. Walk in single file, not side by side

3. General Walking Rules:

   1. Always hold an adult’s hand near roads
   2. Look and listen for approaching vehicles
   3. Do not use phones or play games while walking
   4. Wear bright colors so drivers can see you
   5. Be extra careful in rain or at night

CROSSING THE ROADS:

Safe Places to Cross:

1. Zebra Crossings:

1. White stripes painted across the road
2. Cars must stop for people crossing here
3. Always use zebra crossing when available
4. Still look both ways before crossing

1. Traffic Lights:

1. Controlled crossing points with colored lights
2. Wait for the green light for pedestrians
3. Press the button and wait for signal
4. Cross quickly but do not run

1. Footbridges:

1. Bridges built over busy roads
2. Safest way to cross major highways
3. Always use when available
4. Hold handrails while climbing

Steps for Safe Road Crossing:

Step 1: STOP

• Stop completely at the edge of the road
• Do not step into the road yet
• Hold adult’s hand tightly
• Look for a safe place to cross

Step 2: LOOK

• Look RIGHT first, then LEFT, then RIGHT again
• Check that no vehicles are coming
• Look for motorcycles and bicycles too
• Make sure the road is completely clear

Step 3: LISTEN

• Listen for sounds of approaching vehicles
• Some vehicles are quiet and hard to see
• Turn off music or stop talking
• Use your ears as well as your eyes

Step 4: CROSS

• Walk straight across quickly but do not run
• Keep looking left and right while crossing
• Do not stop in the middle of the road
• Go straight to the other side

TRAFFIC LIGHT SIGNS:

Traffic Light Colors and Meanings:

1. RED LIGHT 🔴

• For Cars: STOP completely and wait
• For People: Do NOT cross the road
• Rule: Never cross when light is red
• Remember: Red means DANGER – STOP!

2. YELLOW/AMBER LIGHT 🟡

• For Cars: Prepare to stop, slow down
• For People: Do NOT start crossing
• Rule: Wait if you haven’t started crossing
• Remember: Yellow means GET READY!

3. GREEN LIGHT 🟢

• For Cars: Go forward carefully
• For People: Safe to cross at pedestrian crossings
• Rule: Look both ways even when green
• Remember: Green means GO SAFELY!

Pedestrian Traffic Lights:

• Red Walking Figure: Do not cross, wait
• Green Walking Figure: Safe to cross
• Flashing Red: Finish crossing quickly
• Push Button: Press to request crossing signal

Special Road Safety Rules:

1. Never Cross Between Parked Cars: Cars cannot see you
2. Avoid Crossing at Corners: Poor visibility for drivers
3. No Playing on Roads: Roads are for transport, not play
4. Emergency Vehicles: Always give way to ambulances, fire trucks
5. School Bus Safety: Wait for bus to leave before crossing
6. Weather Awareness: Extra care in rain, fog, or darkness

Road Safety Reminders:

• Always ask adult help when crossing roads
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing
• Wear bright clothing to be easily seen
• Stay alert – no distractions while near roads

Class Activity:
