NIGERIA PORT AUTHORITY {NPA}.
Nigeria Port Authority is an organ of the federal government charged with the responsibilities of producing facilities and controlling seaports in a country. They provide facilities at the port to ensure effective and efficient sea transportation.
The facilities are boats, harbours, wharves, trailers, forklifts etc.
Nigeria has seaports in Apapa Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar, Sapele etc.
FUNCTIONS OF NIGERIA PORT AUTHORITY {NPA}.
- Provision of Facilities: the port provides facilities like forklifts and navigational aids.
- Maintenance and Improvement of Ports: the authority is responsible for the improvement of ports including dredging of channels of the port for easy passage of ships.
- Provision and Maintenance of Security: it provides security to monitor the movement of ships, cargo and people within and around the nation’s port
- The port authority provides office accommodation for officials of immigration customs and shipping companies that work in the ports.
- Revenue Collection: The ports collect harbor and dock dues.
- Provision of warehouse: the port provides a warehouse where cargoes are stored before they are loaded and after unloading from vessels.
- Maintenance Facilities: They provide ship repair and re-fueling.
FUNCTIONS OF SEAPORTS
- They serve as entry and departure points for goods and passengers.
- They are a port of call for the refueling of big ocean vessels.
- They provide dockyards where repairs and maintenance work are carried out on ships.
- They provide employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled.
- They serve as fishing harbors and sell fish cargoes to fishing travelers.
- They serve as bases for defense purposes to monitor activities within the country’s territorial waters in times of war.
NIGERIA AIRPORT AUTHORITY (NAA)
The Nigeria Airport Authority is a statutory body or public co – co-operation charged with the responsibility of managing, maintaining, running, administrating and controlling all airports e.g. Murtala Muhammed Airport Ikeja, Aminu Kano Airport Kano etc. are international airports in Nigeria while Calabar Airport are examples of local airports.
FUNCTIONS OF THE N.A.A
- Control of Airway: It controls domestic and international airlines.
- Maintenance of All Facilities: It provides repairs and maintenance facilities for damaged aircraft.
- Provision of Warehouse: The authority provides a warehouse for the storage of goods and luggage before loading and offloading.Â
- Housing of Security Agents: It provides office accommodation for customs, immigration, police and other agents who work at the airport.
- Revenue Collection: The airport authority takes ‘charge of collecting airport taxes from airline shop operators in the airport etc.
- Ensure Passenger Security: The airport ensures passenger safety by providing security.
- Administration: It refers to the general administration management and control of the airport.
- The authority makes sure that airports in the country have a good road network for vehicles coming to them.

- They serve as refueling points for long-distance aircraft.
- They offer landing facilities for domestic and internal aircraft.
- They promote commerce and trade within and among countries.
- They offer employment opportunities to specialize in an unskilled sector of the aviation industry.
- They serve as entry points for goods and passengers.
- They serve as bases for the defense to check activities in the airspace of countries.
