Cosmetology Entrepreneurship Project II – SS3 Beauty & Cosmetology Lesson Note (First Term)

Product creation in cosmetology means making your own beauty products, such as hair oil, a face mask or lip gloss, instead of buying finished ones. It needs a clean workspace, accurate measurement, the right raw ingredients, a careful mixing process, and good packaging and labelling. In this project, the product is a natural whipped shea butter cream.

Behavioural objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

• give reasons for creating their own beauty products;
• state the hygiene and safety rules for a production area;
• name the base, active ingredients, emulsifiers and preservatives in a product and state what each does;
• describe the steps for making a natural whipped shea butter cream;
• list the information that must appear on a product label.

From stylist to manufacturer

In our previous lesson, we talked about planning a business. Today, we are looking at the most exciting part: product creation. In the beauty world, many successful entrepreneurs did not just buy other people’s products. They created their own. Whether it is a special hair oil, a natural face mask or a custom lip gloss, making your own products gives you more control over quality and helps you make more profit.

Why create your own products?

• Uniqueness: You can create something that no one else has (for example, a hair cream that smells like local lemongrass).
• Cost-effective: It is often cheaper to buy raw ingredients in bulk and mix them yourself than to buy finished bottles.
• Trust: When you know exactly what is inside your bottle, you can confidently tell your customers it is safe for their skin and hair.

Safety, hygiene and standards

Before we touch any ingredients, we must talk about the “Golden Rule” of production: cleanliness. Because these products go on the skin or hair, a small mistake can cause infections or rashes.

The production environment

• Your workspace must be scrubbed clean.
• No fans should blow dust around while you are mixing.
• Keep pets and small children away from the production area.

Personal hygiene

• Always wear a headcover (scarf or hairnet) so hair does not fall into the mix.
• Wear gloves and a face mask.
• Wash and dry all your mixing bowls and spoons thoroughly.

Measurement accuracy

In cosmetology, we do not “guess.” If a recipe says 10ml, use a measuring cylinder or a syringe. If you add too much of a chemical, it could be harmful. If you add too little, the product might spoil quickly.

What are the raw ingredients in a beauty product?

Every beauty product is a combination of different “groups” of ingredients. To create a good product, you need to understand what each part does.

The base (the main body)

This is the ingredient used in the largest amount.

• For a hair oil, the base might be coconut oil or shea butter.
• For a toner, the base is usually water or rosewater.

Active ingredients (the “workers”)

These are the ingredients that actually fix the problem.

• Vitamin E: Good for skin healing.
• Aloe vera: Good for soothing burns or dryness.
• Honey: Great for moisture.

Emulsifiers and preservatives

• Emulsifiers: These help oil and water mix together so they do not separate.
• Preservatives: These prevent mould and bacteria from growing. Without a preservative, a natural cream made with water might spoil in just a few days.

How do you make a natural whipped shea butter cream?

For your project, we will focus on a simple, high-demand product: a natural whipped shea butter cream. Follow these steps in order.

1. Melting: Use a “double boiler” (place a bowl over a pot of hot water). Never put oils directly on fire, or they will lose their nutrients. Melt your shea butter until it is liquid.
2. Cooling: Let the oil cool down until it is slightly thick but still soft (like the consistency of thickened milk).
3. The “actives”: Add your liquid oils (like almond oil or jojoba oil) and your vitamin E at this stage. Adding them while the butter is boiling hot can “kill” the vitamins.
4. Whipping: Use a hand mixer or a whisk to beat the mixture until it becomes fluffy, like whipped cream or cake frosting.
5. Scenting: Add a few drops of essential oil (like lavender or peppermint) and give it one final mix.

Packaging and branding your creation

You have made a great product, but if it looks messy in the jar, nobody will buy it. Packaging is the “clothing” of your product.

Choosing the container

• Ensure the lid is airtight so the product does not dry out.
• The size should match the price. Do not put a small amount of cream in a giant jar, because it makes the customer feel cheated.

Labelling (legal and professional requirements)

Your label must include:

• The brand name: for example, Rukaya’s Glow Butter.
• List of ingredients: Always list them from the largest amount to the smallest.
• How to use: for example, “Apply to damp hair after washing”.
• Expiry date: Usually 6 to 12 months for handmade natural products.

The “unboxing” experience

Think about how the jar feels in the hand. Is it sticky? Is the label straight? A clean, beautiful jar tells the customer that the person who made it is a professional.
