Why Do We Need Standards?

Imagine you buy a “200W” solar panel, but when you put it in the sun, it only produces 50W. Or imagine you buy a battery that explodes after two days. This is why we have Standards.

Standards are like the “Referees” in a football match. They make sure:

  1. Quality: The product does what the label says.
  2. Safety: The equipment won’t shock the user or cause a fire.
  3. Compatibility: A panel made in China can work with an inverter made in Germany and a cable made in Lagos.

In Nigeria, we listen to three main “Referees”: SON, NERC, and IEC.

 

The Local Referee – SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria)

SON is the most important body for anything sold in a Nigerian market. Their job is to stop “fake” or “substandard” goods from entering the country.

What SON does for Solar:

  • SONCAP: This is a certificate that solar importers must have. It proves the panels have been tested.
  • Labeling: SON insists that a panel must have a “Flash Test” sticker on the back showing its real power output.
  • The NIS Mark: If you see the “NIS” (Nigerian Industrial Standard) logo on a solar cable or battery, it means it has passed the Nigerian test for quality.

 

The Big Boss – NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission)

While SON looks at the products, NERC looks at the systems and the people.

NERC’s Role in Solar:

  1. Licensing: If you want to build a big “Solar Farm” to sell power to your village, you need a permit from NERC.
  2. Grid Code: NERC writes the rules for Grid-Tied systems. They decide how your solar system “talks” to the national grid (NEPA/PHCN) so you don’t blow up the transformer on your street.
  3. Certified Installers: NERC is working to make sure only trained engineers (like you!) are allowed to install big systems, to prevent quacks from causing accidents.

 

The Global Referee – IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)

Since we don’t manufacture many solar cells in Nigeria yet, we rely on International Standards. The IEC is the worldwide “gold standard.”

The Labels You Must Look For:

  • IEC 61215: This is the “Strength Test” for panels. It means the panel can survive heavy rain, heat, and even hail stones without cracking.
  • IEC 61730: This is the “Safety Test.” It ensures the panel won’t give you a lethal shock if you touch the frame.
  • IEC 62109: This is for Inverters. It ensures the “brain” of your system is smart enough to shut down if there is a short circuit.

Pro Tip: Always check the back of a solar panel. If it doesn’t have an “IEC” stamp, it’s probably a low-quality “Grade B” or “Grade C” panel that won’t last 5 years.

 

How to Use Standards in Your Design

As a student designer, how do you apply this? Follow this simple “Quality Checklist” before you start a job:

  1. Cables: Only use “Solar DC Cables” (IEC 60228). Never use regular house wiring for panels; the sun will melt the plastic in six months!
  2. Mounting Rails: Ensure the aluminum frames are strong enough to withstand Nigerian “August Break” winds.
  3. Inverters: Only buy inverters that have an “Anti-Islanding” feature (a NERC/IEC requirement). This stops your solar system from sending power to the street when the grid is down, which could kill a technician working on the pole.

Summary: * SON keeps the fakes out.

  • NERC manages the connection and the laws.
  • IEC ensures the technology is world-class.
