Topic: Practical: Maintenance of Installed System

Preparation and Safety First

Before you touch any panel or wire, you must prepare. Maintenance is dangerous if you are careless.

The Technician’s Toolkit:

  • Cleaning: Soft brush, bucket of clean water, and a microfiber cloth.
  • Testing: A digital multimeter and a DC clamp meter.
  • Tools: Insulated screwdrivers, pliers, and a wire stripper.

Safety Protocol:

  1. Wear your PPE: Rubber-soled boots and gloves are a must.
  2. The “Power Down” Rule: Always switch off the AC loads and then the DC solar input before touching any internal connections.
  3. Ladder Safety: Ensure your ladder is on firm ground and leaning at a safe angle.

 

Practical Testing – Using the Multimeter

Now that the system is clean, we must “measure its heartbeat.” We use a multimeter to check if the electricity is flowing at the right “pressure” (Voltage).

Testing Steps:

  1. Open Circuit Voltage (Voc​): Disconnect the solar strings from the inverter and measure the voltage coming from the roof. Compare this to what is written on the back of the panels. If it is too low, a panel might be bypassed or broken.
  2. Battery Voltage: Measure the battery bank. A healthy 12V Lead-Acid battery should read about 12.6V to 13.8V when charged. If it reads 10.5V, it is “deeply discharged” and needs help.
  3. Continuity Test: Use the “Beep” setting on your meter to check if a fuse is blown or if a wire is broken inside its insulation.

 

The Cleaning Practical

Dust is the “silent thief” of solar power. In Nigeria, during the Harmattan, a thick layer of dust can stop 30% of sunlight from reaching the cells.

Step-by-Step Cleaning:

  • The Cooling Rule: Never pour water on panels in the middle of a hot day. The glass can crack. Clean at 7:00 AM or 6:00 PM.
  • The Water Rule: Use plain water. If the panels are very oily, use a tiny bit of mild dish soap. Never use “Omo” or harsh detergents.
  • The Technique: Start from the top and work your way down. Gently scrub with a soft brush and rinse. Don’t leave “puddles” of water to dry into spots.

 

Fault-Finding (Being a Solar Detective)

When a customer says, “My lights are not coming on,” you need to find where the “chain” is broken.

The Fault-Finding Flow:

  1. Check the Inverter Screen: Does it show an Error Code? (e.g., “Low Battery” or “Overload”).
  2. The “Physical” Check: Look for burnt smells, melted wires, or loose terminals. A loose wire is the most common cause of failure!
  3. Check the Breakers: Did a heavy appliance (like a pumping machine) trip the circuit breaker?
  4. The Battery Test: If the system works in the day but dies 5 minutes after sunset, the batteries are likely “sulfated” and need replacement.

 

Final Documentation and Reporting

Maintenance isn’t finished until the paperwork is done. A professional technician records everything in a Maintenance Log.

What to write down:

  • System Status: Was it working when you arrived?
  • Work Done: “Cleaned 4 panels, tightened battery bolts, replaced one 60A fuse.”
  • Recommendations: “The mango tree near the roof needs trimming because it is shading the panels from 4:00 PM.”
  • Next Service Date: Usually 6 months from today.

Summary: Practical maintenance is about keeping things Clean, Tight, and Dry. If you can do these three things, 90% of solar problems will never happen.
