Internet connection faults on a phone usually come from three places: the APN settings, the mobile data settings, or the hotspot. The APN is a set of instructions that tells the phone how to connect to the network provider’s gateway. A technician checks these settings, and resets network settings, before blaming the hardware.

Behavioural objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- explain what an APN is and say how to find it on a phone;
- list the common causes of slow or non-working mobile data;
- name common hotspot faults and say how to fix them;
- follow the troubleshooting checklist in the correct order.
Why does the internet fail when data is on?
Think of internet data like water flowing through a pipe into your phone. If the pipe is blocked, leaking or disconnected, the water will not reach you.
When a student or a customer says, “My data is on, but the internet isn’t working,” they are usually facing one of three blocks:
- APN issues: The phone does not know the “address” of the network.
- Mobile data faults: The “switch” is broken or the SIM is confused.
- Hotspot problems: The “bridge” between two phones is closed.
What is an APN (Access Point Name)?
The APN is the most important setting for internet. It is a set of instructions that tells your phone exactly how to connect to your network provider’s gateway.
- The symptom: You have a 4G or 5G signal bar at the top and you have a data plan, but no “H+”, “LTE” or “4G” icon appears next to the signal bar.
- How to identify it: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Advanced > Access Point Names.
- The “human” side: Think of the APN as a “username and password” for the whole network. If it is empty or has a typo (like “web.gprs.mtnn.com” instead of “web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net”), the network will ignore your phone.
What are mobile data faults?
Sometimes the data icon is there, but the pages refuse to load. This is a data fault. The common causes are:
- Network mode: Your phone might be stuck on “2G Only” or “3G Only”. Always set it to “4G/3G/2G Auto” so the phone can find the strongest signal.
- Data limit: Most phones have a “Data Warning” or “Data Limit” setting. If you reach the limit, the phone will “cut” the internet to save your money.
- Airplane Mode “trick”: If the internet is sluggish, switch Airplane Mode on for 5 seconds and then off. This forces the phone to “re-shake hands” with the nearest mast.
What are hotspot and tethering faults?
A hotspot lets you share your phone’s internet with a laptop or another phone. It is like turning your phone into a mini Wi-Fi router. The common faults are:
- “Connected, No Internet”: The second phone is talking to your phone, but your phone is not sharing the data. Check if “Data Saver” is on (Data Saver must be off for hotspots to work).
- Wrong band: Older laptops cannot see “5GHz” hotspots. If your laptop cannot find your phone, change the hotspot setting to “2.4GHz Band”.
- Device limit: Some phones limit the hotspot to only 1 or 2 people. Check your “Connected Devices” list.
What is the troubleshooting checklist?
Before you start formatting a phone or complaining to the network, follow these steps in order (the “order of operation”):
- The “balance” check: Dial the code (for example *310# or *323#) to be 100% sure you have active data.
- The “SIM swap”: Put the SIM in another phone. If it works there, the problem is your phone’s settings. If it does not work there, the problem is the SIM or the network.
- The “network reset”: Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This is the “magic reset” that fixes most internet bugs without deleting your photos.
Teacher’s golden rule for SS2
“90% of internet issues in Nigeria are solved by either resetting network settings or checking the APN. As a technician, always check these two before you tell a customer their phone has a ‘hardware’ problem. It saves them money and makes you look like a pro!”
Evaluation
- What is an APN, and where do you find it on an Android phone?
- A phone shows a signal bar and has a data plan, but no “H+”, “LTE” or “4G” icon. Which setting should you check first?
- State three causes of a data fault where the data icon is present but pages will not load.
- Your laptop cannot find your phone’s hotspot. What change can you make to the hotspot setting?
- List the three steps of the troubleshooting checklist in order.
Assignment
- Explain the “digital pipe” idea and the three blocks that can stop the internet from working.
- Describe the “SIM swap” test and say what each result tells you.
- Explain why a technician should check the APN and reset network settings before telling a customer the phone has a hardware problem.
