Business Opportunities in Livestock SS1 Livestock Farming Lesson Note
Download Lesson NoteTopic: Business Opportunities in Livestock
In our previous lessons, we learned how to raise birds, pigs, cattle, and rabbits. But farming doesn’t end when the animal is grown. In fact, for many smart businessmen, the real money starts after the animal leaves the farm. This is called Value Addition.
Today, we will look at how you can turn “just an animal” into several different businesses.
Meat Processing (From Animal to Plate)
Most people just sell their animals “live” in the market. While this is okay, you make much more money if you process the meat yourself.
- Slaughterhouse (Abattoir) Services: Providing a clean place for butchers to kill and prepare animals.
- Packaging and Branding: Instead of selling meat in the open market where flies can touch it, you can clean the meat, cut it into parts (like laps, wings, or ribs), put it in a tray with plastic wrap, and sell it to supermarkets.
- Preservation: You can turn meat into long-lasting products.
- Suya and Kilishi: These are famous Nigerian ways of adding value to beef.
- Smoking: Smoked chicken or guinea fowl can be sold at a higher price because it tastes better and lasts longer.
- Sausages and Bacon: Turning pork into sausages or bacon.
Hides and Skins (The Leather Business)
The skin of the animal is often treated as “waste” or just eaten as “Ponmo.” However, the skin is a goldmine for the industrial sector.
- Leather Tanning: This is the process of turning raw skin into leather.
- Value Addition: Once the skin is tanned, it can be used to make:
- Designer shoes and belts.
- Handbags and wallets.
- Drums and traditional musical instruments.
- Export Opportunity: Nigeria’s “Red Sokoto” goat skins are exported to countries like Italy to make some of the most expensive shoes in the world.
Manure Use (Turning Waste to Wealth)
A big problem on many farms is the “smell” of the waste. But for a business-minded student, that waste is Organic Fertilizer.
- Crop Farming Support: You can dry and bag poultry droppings or cow dung and sell them to vegetable and flower farmers.
- Biogas Production: In modern farming, animal waste is put into a “digester” to create Biogas. This gas can be used for cooking or to generate electricity for the farm.
- Earthworm Farming (Vermiculture): You can use manure to grow worms, which are then dried and sold as high-protein feed for fish.
Other Value Addition Opportunities
“Value Addition” simply means doing something to a product to make it worth more money.
- Dairy Products: Instead of just selling raw milk (which spoils in a few hours), you can turn it into:
- Yogurt: Which can be bottled and branded.
- Local Cheese (Wara): A very popular snack in many parts of Nigeria.
- Egg Processing: If you have too many eggs and they are about to spoil, they can be turned into Egg Powder, which is used by bakeries to make biscuits and bread.
- Feather Industry: Feathers from poultry can be cleaned and used to make pillows, shuttlecocks for badminton, or fashion hats.
Summary: How to Start a Livestock Business
You don’t need a huge farm to be in the livestock business. You can choose one “link” in the chain:
- The Supplier: You sell the feed or the chicks to the farmer.
- The Producer: You raise the animals.
- The Processor: You buy from the farmer, kill, clean, and package the meat.
- The Marketer: You move the meat or eggs from the farm to the final customers in the city.
The Golden Rule: The more “work” you do to the product (cleaning, packaging, or cooking), the more money the customer will pay you.
Class Activity / Review
- Think & Share: If you have ₦50,000, would you rather buy two goats to raise (Production) or buy five crates of eggs to pack in fine boxes and sell to teachers (Marketing/Value Addition)? Why?
- Value Chain: List three products that can be made from a cow’s skin besides “Ponmo.”
Homework: Look around your kitchen or a nearby shop. Find one product that comes from an animal (like milk, leather, or meat). Write down the name of the company that “processed” it and how they changed it from its original form.
