Topic: Soil in Horticulture

What is Soil in Horticulture?

If you want to be a successful gardener or farmer in Nigeria, you must first become a “friend” of the soil.

In Horticulture, the soil is more than just dirt. It is the foundation. It provides three main things to our delicate crops:

  1. Support: It holds the roots so the plant doesn’t fall over.
  2. Food: It stores the nutrients (NPK) the plant needs to grow.
  3. Water: It acts like a sponge, holding moisture for the plant to drink.

A horticulturist cares more about soil than a maize farmer because our crops (like carrots or lettuce) are very sensitive to how the soil feels and “breathes.”

 

The Three Main Types of Soil

In our environment, you will mostly find three types of soil. You can tell them apart just by touching them!

  1. Sandy Soil
  • Feel: Gritty and rough like sugar.
  • Horticultural Value: Not very good on its own. It lets water run through too fast (drainage is too high), and it doesn’t hold nutrients well.
  • Best for: Watermelons (if you add enough manure).
  1. Clay Soil
  • Feel: Sticky when wet, hard like a rock when dry.
  • Horticultural Value: It holds a lot of water but doesn’t let air in. Roots can “suffocate” or rot in clay.
  • Best for: Most horticultural crops struggle here unless you mix it with other things.
  1. Loamy Soil (The “Gold” of Horticulture)
  • Feel: Soft, crumbly, and usually dark in color.
  • Horticultural Value: This is the perfect soil. It holds enough water but also lets extra water drain out. It is rich in Organic Matter (Humus).
  • Best for: Almost everything! Tomatoes, peppers, and all flowers love Loam.

 

Important Properties of Soil

To understand your soil, you need to look at these three properties:

  1. Soil Texture

This is how the soil feels (sandy vs. sticky). You cannot easily change the texture of your farm, so you must choose crops that match your texture.

  1. Soil Structure

This is how the soil particles “clump” together. Good structure means there are tiny tunnels for air and water to move through. We improve structure by adding compost.

  1. Soil pH (The “Sourness” or “Sweetness”)
  • Acidic Soil: “Sour” soil.
  • Alkaline Soil: “Sweet/Bitter” soil. Most horticultural crops prefer a Neutral pH. If the soil is too acidic (common in Southern Nigeria), we add Lime to fix it.

 

Soil Management (Caring for the Land)

In Horticulture, we don’t just plant and leave. We “manage” the soil to keep it fertile.

  1. Fertilization

We add nutrients back to the soil.

  • Organic: Manure (chicken droppings, cow dung) or Compost (rotted leaves). This is the best for horticulture because it improves soil structure.
  • Inorganic: Chemical fertilizers like NPK 15-15-15. These work fast but don’t stay long in the soil.
  1. Mulching

This is covering the surface of the soil with dry grass or plastic.

  • Why? It keeps the soil cool, stops the sun from drying out the water, and prevents weeds from growing.
  1. Watering (Irrigation)

Since many horticultural crops are grown in the dry season, we must provide water. The soil should be moist, but not “soaked” like a swamp.

 

Common Soil Problems and Solutions

As a student, you might notice things going wrong in your school garden. Here is a quick “Doctor’s Guide” for soil:

Problem What it looks like The Solution
Erosion Small gutters forming after rain Plant cover crops or build small ridges.
Nutrient Loss Leaves turning yellow or stunted growth Add well-rotted manure or NPK fertilizer.
Hard Pan The surface is too hard for roots to go down Use a digging fork to break the soil (tillage).
Waterlogging Water standing on the surface for days Create drainage channels for water to flow out.

Final Summary for Students:

Good soil + Good seeds = A Bountiful Harvest. Always touch your soil; if it feels soft, dark, and moist, your plants will be happy
